    Sleep training advice

So my new 12 month old starting Monday is going to need some sleep training. Mom said today that she doesn't nap, she lays her down and she just cries. She also said that she isn't sleeping at night anymore so mom sleeps in a recliner and has been getting her and co sleeping there with her. I discussed this with mom. Mom says she will wake up cry, go back to sleep and cry in her crib. I told mom to reassure her but don't pick her up and such...Not so sure she is going to follow through. I may look for some brochures to print off for mom. So lil one comes in at one, right when naptime is but she will be the only one. So I need to sleep train correctly now.

I know the drill, lay her down when she cries reassure her etc, but do you have any tips for me that have worked for you when you are told a little one "won't" nap? I know she will nap, I just have to get her with the program .

    ! !

Oh Dear...you are a brave woman! I would never knowingly take a child under those conditions. Usually they don't TELL you

If it were me, I'd make them bring her full time for a couple weeks. Bringing her right at nap time seems kind of unreasonable. It also means they can let her sleep until 10 am, once she does sleep, and then she won't be ready for a nap at 1 no matter what you do.

Plus, if she's really tired (but fights sleep), the minute she's in the car seat on the way to your house, BAM!. If she has even a 5 minute snooze on the way, forget nap time.

I think you need to be VERY honest and strict with this family, or you'll be back here next week saying "OMG!......"

That is the part that scares me . Honestly I would not be taking this child if I didn't really need the money.

I often take kids who might not appear as a good fit and then keep my eyes open for a replacement just in case. I am the main bread winner for my family, if I am not getting lots of calls for interviews I gotta take them.

I would be firm and consistent with parents and baby. Maybe make a list of guidelines to keep baby happy and healthy. Ex: baby needs _____hrs of sleep a night. Etc. Whatever you wish them to follow.

        Good luck!

Thanks! I am nowhere near full. I have my two SA who are before and after school and will be here full time in the summer, but if I could fill up with littler ones I would. I just enjoy the younger kiddos more. Hope that doesn't sound bad. So I am still going to be doing interviews if I get calls. I just don't get many calls.
