    Baseboard Heat

I have electric baseboard heaters. I'm trying to find a creative way to babyproof them without spending tons of money. Any great ideas?

I have 2 in the daycare area.

My husband built me shelves that fit over them. Basically, the top of the shelf extends out the back so that the shelf sits out in front of the heaters but the top reaches the wall. So the heat can still be on and toys won't fall onto it.

On my second heater, I have our preschool table set up (it is wide enough to fit across the whole heater) against the walls and chairs there. It is not perfect but it at least slows down the crawlers.

I asked the fire department inspector how to cover mine and they had no ideas. After looking around for a long time, I ended up making covers for mine. I used white grid shelving like these.

I attached them to make the cover and then zip tied the edges and put eye bolts into the studs and zip tied the cover to the eye bolts. I can still lift it to retrieve things and vacuum, but it keeps little fingers away from the heaters.

A bit more explanation from above since I can't attach a picture.

I created a 3 sided box of sorts to cover the heaters, using the grids and their connectors. Then, I used small zip ties to secure the edges between the connectors to make it more sturdy.

They have been in place since 2004 and have held up beautifully.
