Trying to decide what to put down... mulch again, ruber mulch, artificial grass or rubber matts. what do you use and do you love it or hate it??

I like mulch when it's new. But it doesn't take long to pack down too hard for safety. I try to keep it shoveled and loosened up but it gets ahead of me(I wonder can you rototill mulch?). So far that's all I've tried.

I have grass and mulch, I love both but the mulch cost me several dollars every 2yrs to keep up.
I was considering rubber, then I heard it gets hot and smelly in the summer, so I'm afraid to try it.
