Enforcing A 24/48 Hour Rule For Part Timers?

How would you enforce a 24/48 hour sickness rule for a family that only comes 3 days? DCB is on strike two of me having to send home. I love the 24/48 rule but its tricky because let's say family comes on Monday, wednesday, Thursday. If he was sick Wednesday they'd have to keep him home Thursday anyways. If its a Thursday, well then there's the weekend which is well over 48 hours. Basically (trust me on this with this family) the rule would keep them from sending the child sick on the first day of his week by not for the second or third day. So what do I do? Terming is an option and a very real one come this fall, but for right now I'm trying to stick it out until then. Any suggestions?

I can see how that rule then would only work on certain days.

Are they actually sending him sick or is he just getting sick a lot?

I guess depending on the behavior/intentions of the parent.....I'd respond differently.

They have sent him sick. The last time DCB def looked "off" when DCD dropped him off but I thought, well, could just be tired. But an hour into it he was very clearly sick. When I talked to DCM she said "oh yeah he wasn't feeling good last night either but I figured it would be gone by the morning"... Not so much. Or the time before that " he had dihearea and was up all night but he seemed fine this morning." Even though they know dihearea is something a child needs to stay home for 24 hours for. I didn't know he had it until discussing his night when I called for pick up.

In that case, I'd make a policy or rule stating that if he is sent home from care because they "knew" he was sick but sent him anyways that they will get a mark on their file. Once they reach 3 times, they are out.

Be firm. You know when they are lying...it's not hard to tell.

Really drive home the NO SYMPTOMS for 24 hours before sending him or they will always do the "well he seemed fine this morning..." line of thinking.

Yup,I'm still kicking myself for not trusting my insticts the last time he looked "off." I have to send out a letter on spring/summer and I think I will address the sickness issue in that. Hopefully with spring coming we won't see as much sickness as we did this winter at least!

I send out illness reminders in the beginning of cold/flu season and again as necessary.

Here is the one I use. You are welcome to use any or all of it if it applies to your situation.

How I do It is that my 48 hours is defined as two full days..so if they are sent home sick from daycare on Monday they can't come Tuesday or Wednesday, if they are sent home Wednesday they can't come Thursday or Friday. Obviously the rule really doesn't cause the parents much distress on Fridays since they'd are already going to be out 48 hours or for families that only come 1-2 days a week. I'm much more watchful of my well child checks at drop off on Fridays and for part time children especially children that have arrived sick in the past.
