Mom In Denial That Baby Has Diarrhea

I have one infant out sick with the stomach flu. Yesterday another infant had diarrhea twice. They were very large amounts of diarrhea both times. Had to change the full outfit and bedding. When I let the mom know she doesn't believe it was diarrhea. She still brought the infant today. When I mentioned the other baby has the stomach flu she says "well hopefully we are lucky and dcb doesn't catch it too". She also said the baby had looser than normal poop at home but she doesn't consider it diarrhea.
Pretty sure she already has it and now I am feeling queasy myself. I'm not sure if it's because she doesn't have a fever or what. I've not had this problem before. Kind of frustrated.

First thing I learned in this business was how to define WHAT things I exclude for so that parents cannot argue with me about why I am denying their child care.

The following are things I exclude for:
    • Inability to participate as normal in our daily activities
    • Fever
    • ANY bm's NOT contained in a diaper
    • Vomit
    • Unexplained rashes
    • Excessive nasal discharge
    • Excessive coughing
    • Abnormal crying/screaming

I then make sure I add that I do NOT care WHY any of the above symptoms are occurring just that they are.

In your case, the baby would have been excluded until 24 hours AFTER they no longer had any loose poop.

Mom can call it diarrhea, loose poop, runny crap, soft bm's etc etc.....I wouldn't care because I don't exclude for words.

    ONLY SYMPTOMS

    See the difference?

Why did you accept the baby into care today? If you told mom that baby has diarrhea and that baby needs to stay home, why did you let mom bring baby today?

I just had a vision of how to rewrite my handbook, starting out with definitions like the state laws.
        Diarrhea:
        Fecal matter that is:
        1. Looser than normal for a given child
        2. More watery than normal for a given child or
        3. More frequent than normal for a given child or
        4. Not contained by diaper or
        5. Not contained by pull-up or
        6. When a child (see definition of child) of preschool age (see definition of preschool age) who is unable to get to the available toilet or potty learning chair (see definition of potty learning chair) in time to expel the fecal matter into the available toilet or potty learning chair.

I was shocked I guess when she acted like it wasn't diarrhea. I definitely should not have let her come today. I will use the tips provided from
Y'all and update my handbook. I guess I just expect common sense. I myself would not send my baby to daycare with diarrhea.

Well, you re going to be in for a huge let down there.... ::

Guilty here too but that didn't last long. Every one of my first families had zero common sense. If they did, I never saw any of it.

I had this but with constipation instead. I expressed my concern repeatedly and finally had to show dcf a chart.

what they said and to add to the pie..

When dcp says oh I think they just threw up because the sun was shinning at 4am instead of 5am and the roosters crowed later than normal....(yah I threw that out there) My response would be while anything is possible.........

We always would rather be safe than sorry, dck can't come today and needs to stay home for at least a full 24 hours from that last time they vomited, see you in two days......

I would be worried about her attitude. Babies can dehydrate quickly due to diarrhea. Next time I would remind her of that and if she tries to bring baby the next day, I might require a note that lil one saw a doctor. I just get irritated when parents don't look out for their kiddos. That ticks me off more than them treating me bad most times.
