    Wall Art

Ok so I didn't really know what to title this thread.... but basically I'm looking for some inspiration on what to put on my walls. Since this is a home daycare, I want whatever is on the walls to be child friendly, but not so childish that it looks silly in a home setting. The main daycare area will be my livingroom and dining room.

If anyone has pictures, or links, or even suggestions on something I could paint myself or whatever, I'm very open to ideas! My walls are bare and I'm ready to get down to decorating!

I take pictures the kids have drawn, have them write their names and ages (if old enough) and date them, get an inexpensive wooden or fancy looking frame from Wal-mart or Target mat them and hang. Makes them look like framed art that you purchased and the kids LOVE to see their own stuff displayed. We change them out regularly as the kids grow and make new ones but there are a few I have left up for a long time because they were soooo cute!!

If you check out my photo album you can see a few things I did with the walls. I found someone on craigslist selling the letters (Live, Laugh, Learn) so I put those on the wall as well and some shelves with stuffed owls and then had a friend paint a tree (not so much living room friendly but great for just a daycare room). I also matched some fabric and wrapped it around some canvas and then the back of my bookcases.

I decided about 5 years into doing daycare that I was tired of my home looking like a daycare. Yes I run a daycare from my home, but it is my home. I have family pictures on the wall and pictures of nature. That's about it. I occasionally hang daycare art on the wall, but we don't really do a lot of art, so there isn't a lot to hang. I do hang pictures of the daycare children, but my home is my home. I want to feel comfortable in it. I probably sound like an ogre, but I had to find a way to do this job and not feel trapped by it. If i had a separate area for daycare I would dress it up differently, but my living space is my daycare space.

You sound like how I want to do things. Be decorative, without being overly kiddie.

I used to try and make my house look like a daycare, but i got to the point where I figured that the parents are making the choice to choose a home daycare. It is my home. If they want kiddie stuff decorating the place, they are welcome to look for that. We have had discussions on my pictures, such as where we were, what we were doing, how old my kids were in the pictures those types of things. The nature pictures have been objects of discussion as has the painting my father did that hangs in my dining room. I have a very home based environment and I spent a lot of years feeling guilty over it. Not anymore. My home is what i offer, take it or leave it

Yeah it would totally be different if I had the daycare in my basement or some sort of separate area. This is going to my home first and foremost, my business second. I do currently have pictures of my son lining the stair way, so thats a nice homey touch. But we also just recently moved here so all the other walls are mostly blank. I know I need to put something up, but don't want to put things up that could fall down, break, etc. So right now I'm just exploring options that, like I said, are decorative and fun without being gaudy. Kwim?

If you don't want it to look like a playroom in whole house then anything appropriate to all ages works. If you had pictures of family, the kids can ask who they are and remember which is teaching the kids and also a great conversational piece too. If you have abstract art work, you can teach them about that and who painted it. You can also take dried leaves, for example, frame them in glass with a thin frame (like plexi-glass) and hang them on the wall.......those look really nice and they're very cheap to make. Have an area in your home from the children's art work too. Adding a mirror adds a lot to a room, especially space wise it makes it look larger.

Do you have a type of mirror you would recommend?

The mirrors I'm thinking of would mainly be for the purpose of making it feel like a home. Any kind of mirror because it would be pretty much at your eye level. If you wanted a mirror at the child's level or even along the floor for babies, I think they need to be made of some unbreakable material or something and web sites sell those mirrors for hundreds of dollars. I've heard of people using the mirrors that are under 10 dollars from Target/Walmart too, but you could just keep it simple and call your licensor and ask if their is a special type of mirror that is allowed to be mounted at a child's level. Then at least you can say "so-and-so from the agency approved it though" when they ask during inspections.

Yeah I remember someone on here had posted a picture of their setup with a mirror at child level.

I have a seperate room for daycare, and I still don't like kiddie cartoon type decorations. My daycare room walls look like an extention of the rest of my house.

The daycare room has framed photos of the daycare kids, and mostly their artwork, but even that I frame as well. My house is country/woodsy type decor, so I have some of that sprinkled throughout the daycare room as well.

I figure if I have to sit in that room all day, I want to look at things that reflect who I am as well, while still giving them ownership of the space.
