How Do You Deal w/ Potty Training Accidents?

Just curious as to what everyone's policy is on potty training. How do you deal with a kid who is having daily poop and pee accidents? Do you just clean it up and try again or do you have restrictions on wearing underwear in your home?

How do you handle it when the kid starts getting poop and pee on your carpet and/or furniture?

no way jose..... every kid is in a pull up or diapers if they can not go in the toilet.

I can give you a hand out on PT that I got years ago. The handout is so old that the phone numbers on it are no longer valid.

You have to set the rules for the parents and they have to get on board... I wanted to edit to add that I think Nannyde has a good article on PT on the front page of this website. Hopefully I can go find it for you.

Also wanted to add that every child must be accident free for a full 2 weeks before I get to make the decision to move a child to underwear, its my call, not the parents.

Most of my kids who are ready to potty train rarely have accidents, so my response would be based on the child.
If they seemed ready and were upset by the accidents then I would do a pull up over underwear and maybe increase potty times at first and gradually move them farther apart. I'd be praising success and just quietly and quickly assisting with clean up if needed.

If the child just wasn't ready and they were not so much accidents but just using the "bathroom" as normal then I'd be putting them back in diapers.

Hey thanks for that document. There is some good info in there.

I am in one of those "dck is a friend's" situations so I am having a hard time putting my foot down. The parents bring the kid in underwear everyday and have been forgetting to bring him extra underwear and pants. I do put him in pull ups for nap time. I think that I will tell them that we need to come up with another solution if he poops in his pants again.

Also, I am wondering if the child's potty training progress would regress if I start making him wear pull ups all day while in my care if he is used to wearing underwear at home.

          I see.

I would tell them underwear and then the pull up. I am sure they are going to get tired of the dirty bags of clothing that you will send home each day.

          I would tell dcp this:

I know that you are excited about this new milestone in your child's life, however, I need to set some ground rules in order to keep all children and our environment safe.

If your friends expect you to let their child ruin your house by letting their child poop all over it, they are not frriends that you want.

Kids in my care have to be dry for at least 2 weeks, before I allow them to use cloth underwear, and in these two weeks, they need to stay dry on their own not relay on me reminding them to go potty
....1 accident can happen, but the second one puts the child back on pull-ups and we start over.

              Yep!
Think of it this way (and tell your friend) - it's unsanitary. If he is having accidents every day I would hold off a few weeks then start backup.

pull up over underwear is the way to go.
I can't fathom why parents think it's ok for their child to have accidents on their floor, furniture, etc. It makes me very angry that many don't have consideration for us and our homes. How would they like it?!

If the child is having multiple accidents in a row or several in a week, their potty training cannot 'regress' very far anyway. They are not potty-trained, so the only direction they can go is forward.

I have 2 dcgs that have taken a step back. One was trained for several months and then her twin sisters were born. Now she holds it as long as she can, I make her try right before nap, then put pull-ups on her which she'll use. Then she usually holds it the rest of the day till she goes home. She's over 3 1/3.

The other dcg turned 3 in January, took right off with the pt'ing and did well. Right into the thicker training pants. But the past week or so she 'doesn't want to' use the potty. I feel like putting her back into pull-ups all day will send her right into the mindset to not even try.

Yikes, from that article you linked, dcm and I are doing so many things wrong. Including giving her a chocolate chip for every success.

I really have no advice for OP, just letting you know I'm right there with you.
