    March Themes/Ideas

We are doing Seuss week the first week of March

Next two weeks are St. Patrick's Day themed, lots of green/clovers, rainbows, etc

I am stuck on the last 7 days! It isn't nearly warm enough here to start spring discussions, Easter is in April.

I wanted to do a nursery rhyme theme and have NOTHING for this, most of my kids have never heard them! Too 'lame' for mostly 3-4's? Three Billy Goats Gruff could be really cool...

Weather. In all of my books for March they do the same as your doing plus weather. Also March in like a lion/lamb

Talk about spring and how the weathers changing. It's possible unles you live in CA where it's freaking 75 outside every dumb day.

Gosh I wish for rain so bad.

            My March week themes are:
            • Dr Seuss
            • Pets
            • St. Patricks Day
            • Spring
            • Easter

I have school age kids though, so most of the time these themes are just for my sanity & need for change.

Where ever the kids lead me I am really loving this right now. THis morning they were painting ghosts and pumpkins.
I know I will start to introduce garden and spring items into the playroom and see where they lead. We will do Jack and the Beanstalk and grow beans. My kids love both Mother Goose Tales and just classic fairy tales. We read them a lot.
You could do Humpty Dumpty, Mary Had a Little Lamb, and Jack and Jill as a hint to spring and Easter....

My dcks are all animal lovers. We went from arctic animals including penguins (cut out 3 toed penguin shoe covers to waddle around and dance in, played with arctic animals and ice cubes in water play) to farm animals (building farm scenarios with blocks and vinyl animals, making a finger puppet each week to go with our animals book, learning animal facts) and in March we will go from lambs to lions as we predict what the weather will do. From there we move to other African continent animals, including baby animals and what they are called. And then to local-to-us animals as birds return and babies are born.

We're letting kids do a vote once/month on our 'theme', where we turn the dramatic play into a specific place. Then we stick other stuff in where we can like holidays and weather and seasons.
We just changed, so we will probably still be here in March: Hair Salon.

we do this over the summer. I let each child fill out a slip of paper with 3 choices. We then put them in a fish bowl and draw one each week.

We have a blast. It just stinks when they switch it up to the point of me having to go out and buy things.

I do have a few parents that will go out and buy things to help it become more enjoyable for their child.

my new favorite questions are "what would you like to do today?" (usually a crafty type of thing in their mind) and "how would we do that?" "What do you need?" Sometimes what I think they need is not what they are thinking. I may pull out some extra things I have and ask them if they think they would like to add this..
I am also working on pulling out something and asking them what they would like to do with it. Ex: feathers are on my list for this week. I can see lots of answers- putting it in the playdoh, painting with them, putting them in the kitchen area etc....
I really am working on this child led process.
