I would not enroll my kids in a place that had a dog. My choice. I don't allow my cats around the kids unless I am right there to supervise (they are separated by a locked cat door on another floor. I LOVE animals, we have a good mix of pets in our science area (worms, ants, gecko, fish) we personally have a few cats, I have a snake, and a spider (newest addition).
Diva, I sooooo agree with this. I do not like dogs at all. I am scared to death of them. I also would never put my child in a daycare that has a dog, as I just simply do not trust them. Especially with children....BUt I would never tell someone they could not get a pet to please me...

I have two cats and most of the time they are not around us, but if they are I am always right there. I actually have a don't touch the cat rule. It took one kid to hurt my cat that made me so angry that I just now keep them out of the dc area and if they do decide to come in, the kids all know they may not touch the cat...I wanted to edit to add that me having these cats have created issues for a fwe of my families. It seems that right around cold and flu season, the kids magically become allergic to my cats................Having pets in a home-childcare program can sometimes be a pain.

But if you do as others have suggested here and have the parents sign off on it, informing them of your pets is always a good start. When i tell prospective clients that I have cats, I have had some say ok thanks we will pass..... That's ok, I don't mind that they don't want to come for that reason.

I would just send a note home telling clients when the puppy will arrive. I introduced my daycare to two puppies over the last 6 years.I did keep the kids and pets seperate.I bought an awesome Puppy playpen from amazon.I put a nice bed water and papers in it.I also crate trained in a metal crate .This was very safe for both the puppy and children.Good luck it is quite an adventure.

The puppy will be a lab and golden retriever mixed. I will not crate my puppy since i am home all day long. My daycare is in the basement with a full kitchen and walk out basement. If the puppy needs to go up stairs for a little while then I'm fine with that. I will eventually have kids of my own in the near future and the puppy needs to be around kids. I understand some concerns, but I own a daycare/preschool so i am able to raise my puppy and my own children. I work long hours with crap pay as all of us do. The last thing I want is someone to tell me i can't have a puppy. My fiancé is home in the winter months so it won't be a big deal to have the puppy upstairs for most of the time. But when spring/summer time comes he owns his own landscape company and works. So the puppy will be with me for most of the day.

WELLLL... she pulled her kid.. so i guess i don't have to worry about it.. Thanks everyone for your help. The puppy isn't even set in stone yet. I guess its for the best. She seemed like she would be a very difficult parent to please. I should have know since this is the third daycare that this 12 month old has been too..

Sorry! I've wanted one FOREVER! It was actually my Valentine's present from Dh. She's BEAUTIFUL. She's also a 'look at only' pet. Which puts my liability at zero. Her cage has a key lock. I got a kick out of seeing my dcd's squirm when their littles were so excited to show her off.

it sounds like you dodged a bullet. Sorry that this happened, but it sounds like it would have happened sooner or later for any reason....

I don't know how parents keep their job when they do things like this..... that stinks

Please don't take offense, but that's a risk you run when adding a pet to your daycare. As I said, I wouldn't enroll my child somewhere with a dog, and I love dogs.

On the positive side, you're going to enroll families who want their child around a dog and value that experience. Win-win!

I'm sorry! I agree that it's for the best, though. Now, please post pics of your puppy when you get him/her. I'm a Lab lover--we have a huge yellow Lab that is just awesome.

My first reaction was that this lady has a lot of nerve, basically telling you that you can't have a dog- it's your house and your rules- don't not do soemthing because of a parent that can leave at anytime.
Then I remembered how my neighbor's dog bolted across the street at me yesterday, and I barely was able to run in and close the door before it got to me! Yikes!
Yours is going to be a puppy and sounds really sweet. But, as a Parent, it's the unpredictable nature of dogs that frightens me around kids. I was so grateful I was alone yesterday, and didn't have my usual 6 kids outside when that happened with the dog. NOT saying your puppy would behave this way, but I can see a parent's concern.
At the same time, this lady sounds a little whacky, and it sounds like you dodged a bullet ::

Did you send the text reply and that's why she pulled? Or she pulled before you even sent it?

I'm going to put my two sense in even though you didn't ask. It sounds like you have never owned a puppy before. Puppies have very sharp teeth. Puppies go through a biting phase. I have never know a puppy who hasn't. It takes them a while to learn that biting isn't OK. Even as an adult it hurts!! My pup broke my skin many times. It took a couple months for her to learn that biting is not OK.
Please keep that in mind. One playful bite to a daycare kids could land you in lots of trouble.
I keep my dogs separate from the kids even though they love kids. I highly recommend separating them until the pup is old enough to learn that biting is not OK.

I have had many puppies in my life. They all do this.

Even though I crated the pups they did get socialization. The playpen was great at drop off and pick-up time .All the parents wanted to see her and it was safer than having her running loose. I do not have that now and her crate is in my bedroom. We leave the door of it open and she enjoys lieing in it.
