    oh she's telling stories...

    No, that's a lie!

Some parents. 5 years down the road - Yeah me and Jane were at the party, but the "story" is we were at school.

My sister learned this the hard way with her 11 y/o daughter. She always loved to say the most random off the wall things, still does , and make up stories. Imaginations are fine, but I cautioned my sister that she had to make sure her daughter understood presenting as a fact was lying. It didn't bother her so she didn't take my advice. One awkward conversation with the preschool teacher about the "woman trapped in their basement" (they didn't even have a basement, let alone a woman!!) helped her realize what I meant pretty quick. ::

In all seriousness, lying or being deceptive is my biggest pet peeve. And at 5 she's old enough to understand it's unacceptable. They'll regret it soon enough.

My husband has a birth defect where his fingers and toes are deformed or missing. Seventy years ago there was nothing to be done. It's really just an appearance issue. When his son was small, he asked his dad what happened to his toes. My husband, sometimes smartie pants extraordinaire, told him a shark bit them off. Son went to school and told everyone and got in trouble for lying. Daddy had some explaining to do at school and home. ::

Seems as though whatever caused Brian Williams to "misremember" might be contagious.

we have a child that is a great story teller and tells very tall tales.

she told the other kids that she had 100,00 frozen dolls. I jump into the conversation and say do you think that is true to the other kids. They caught on and said NO, we don't. I asked the story teller what do you think is that made up or is it the truth. Her friends told her I don't think you are telling the truth before she could admit her lie.

The kids caught on to her lies very quickly after reading the story the boy who cried wolf. They ousted her from play time and was crying to me why are they doing that. I told her go ask your friends and they told her you are always lying to us and we don't belive you anymore.

I told the kids that they needed to be nice, but let the natural consequence play out for the story teller.

I try to point out what is real and what is a story. I don't want to smash her creative imagination.
