    P/T Handbook Wording Help Please.

I want to ad a policy to my handbook stating that if a family is contracted p/t and I need to fill their spot with a f/t client, that the p/t family has 2 weeks to decide if they want full time and if not, they will be let go and I will replace with f/t.

I have something written up, but it doesn't sound that great.

    TIA

Could you possibly just put that "contracted full time schedules take precedence over part time schedules" and then verbally tell the family if it comes up that they have two weeks from x date to decide if they would like to go full time or risk losing their spot?

Full time schedules take precedence over part time schedules. In the event that a prospective family wants a full time schedule, families with part time schedules will be offered the full time position. Families have two weeks to decide whether they wish to accept the full time position or make alternative child care arrangements.

      How's that?

          Agreed!

We had just dealt with this issue about a month ago. We had several part time families that would only bring their children one or two days a week. In fact, it was getting so bad that some staff members were only working 10 hrs/week. Unfortunately, I found this forum website AFTER we had terminated DCFs.

We struggled with what and how to say it as well because we did not have anything addressing this issue in our contract.

Personally, I found the best (and what seems the most fair - to me) advice was to offer them a full time position and if they couldn't or didn't want to take it, then give them two weeks. Part-time children are difficult because they take up full-time positions! Terming is NOT easy, but ultimately you have a business to run and your business is how you earn a living!

          Best of luck! Be confident!

I am so bad when it comes to wording and making it sound professional. I used to be so good at it, who knows what happened...

This past summer I actually had to term 2 very p/t kids. I had to fill a full time spot and with the age groups our state has, having them here would have put me over in ratios as far as ages go. I felt really bad and did ask if they wanted the f/t spot first, but they were just here for socialization and it wouldn't have made sense for them to go f/t. I loved the 2 kids and offered for them to come back when my ds was 2.5, but they didn't come back.

I wanted to have something in my handbook for the next time if I ever have to do the same thing again.
