Any tips or tricks on working with a two year old who refuses to get dirty? She will not participate in any activity that involves the possibility of a mess. Playdough, sand, water table, art projects, painting and the like send her running. She won't even eat anything she can't neatly pick up with just her utensils. She is so smart, and behaves like a dream, but this is one area she won't budge on. Thanks!

My only suggestion is to have utensils available for kids who don't want to touch with their hands. so If she you are doing shaving cream play, she could ask a friend to spread it out and then she could do the drawing with a paintbrush. Rice is pretty clean-maybe she would go for that?- Flag

I had one that was like this. When we painted I would put hers in a sealed ziplock bag. I found the idea on Pinterest. Basically I put a white paper down under ziplock bag and let her finger paint that way. When she was done I would take a picture of it and text it to her mom. Lord forbid if she fell outside and got dirt on her hands. Her entire world would come to a dramatic end.- Flag

I would do rice/pasta (dry/colored) at first. I would also have a dish towel handy she could wipe her hands with. I have a VERY clean little dude in care, and that's how I got him started. He gets his own little water bowl and usually uses the tip of ONE finger to play in shaving cream/sensory bins.
It isn't the end all/be all if she doesn't want/NEED the sensory experience.- Flag

Ugh. My own dd4 is like this. We've done messy play since she was little and ever since she was 3 she just can't handle it. I agree with diva's suggestions. I let my dd wash her hands as often as she wants and often have an alternate activity ready for those who can't handle the messy activities. I think as long as these types of activities are offered and they're exposed to them, they will start to feel more comfortable.- Flag
