Daycare & Renting - what are the laws?

I currently rent my home that I use for daycare.

My landlord wants to increase my rent from $800 to $1300 starting in January. He is saying the reason is because he had to purchase commercial insurance on the home.

Does anyone know if there are laws that are for home daycares operating in a rented home?

Honestly, landlords can usually raise the rent any time they want unless you are living in a rent controlled unit.

As for the commercial insurance, if that is required by law for child cares, then you should be paying for that as part if the business expenses. If it's required by the city because you are running a business out of a home, it may perhaps be the case and your landlord was required to have it.

I'd ask him if it was required or not..... depending on the situation and who really should be paying for it, I'm sure he will explain it.

As far as I am aware, I think California is the only state I've heard of that has laws protecting a renter who provides small group care in a rental home.
