Would You Allow This Kid To Be In Underwear?

I've had a DCK "potty trained" for about 5 or 6 months now…if you'll even call it that. They still will never initiate going to the bathroom on their own and will never tell me when they've gone in their pants. I still have this child sit on the potty at designated intervals. I make them go right before nap time, and they wake up wet 95% of the time. Mom did away with diapers 100% from day one of potty training. DCK is almost 3.

Would you allow this child to be in underwear at your daycare?

Nope. I have no problem assisting in potty training as long as there is no body fluid on my floor or furniture. Diaper or pull ups till accident free 2 week at my home.

Does that 2 week rule include nap times?


DCK never has accidents so as long as I remember to set him on the potty every 1.5 hours. This morning I forgot because we were having so much fun with our sensory bins….lo and behold DCK was wet. It's getting old. The 4 other 2 year olds I have will all just go to the bathroom when they need to go. Ugh.

I am flexible on nap time but i dont allow underwear if they cant express the need to use the potty for reasons like you just stated.

I personally would be sick of it. DCK doesn't even care when they are wet so they might as well be in a diaper so they don't spread their urine all over the room. the parents don't mind the accidents? I would rather wait until 3.5 if it meant the kid can actually go on their own. He/she can still sit on the potty after meals and before and after nap.

My center requires children to be accident free for two weeks before being moved to underwear; however, that does not necessarily include naptime. Children who have naptime accidents, but are otherwise potty trained are put in either a pull-up or diaper for naptime and underwear the rest of the time.

I don't initiate any potty training. That version seems to take forever.

Here is my policy
Before a child can begin, they need to be ready. If they can't stay dry two hours from nap, they aren't ready. If Huey are over drinking his may contribute to this.

(1) the child has to be able to say they need to potty before they actually wet themselves.

(2) I don't remind or insist they go during certain times of the day unless we are about to leave the house going on a field trip

(3) they have to wear diapers (no pull-ups) until they can remain dry for two weeks and this includes them initiating their ownnpottymgoing.

Unless the above occurs, no underwear is allowed to be worn at my house.

I don't care about report of potty success at home.

If the child is dry all day except nap time, they would wear pull-ups/diapers at nap only. Night or sleep training is a whole different beast than day time training and has to do with brain maturity (the body/mind recognizing it needs to go and waking the child to go) This is not something that can be "taught" and I'd hate to see a child "punished" for something that is completely out of their control.

If the child is having a ton of accidents while awake, they would be in a pull up/diaper, period. It is too much of a liability to have kids soiling furniture, carpet, toys, etc. where others are playing.

We do have potty intervals through out the day (before we go out, before nap, after nap, etc) where everyone has to at least try. But I won't go out of my way other than those times to have a child go - especially a child who has been truly potty trained for months. IME, a child who is ready to train usually takes about a week or two to get it.

I do wonder if the child has medical issues causing the accidents. A lot of times severe constipation can be the culprit.

If they are wetting my floors then they can not wear underwear . They must be accident free for at least 2 weeks . After that an occasional accident but if those become too frequent then back into a pull up .

I agree with playcare, I would always have him in a diaper at nap.

If he is unable/unwilling to go to the potty without reminders, he isn't trained and I would insist on pullups.

I have this exact dck. Parents set a timer for every 45 minutes at home to take her to the bathroom...

If I did that with my 7 month old, they would be accident free too
Taking a child to the toilet in timed intervals for that long, is NOT trained.

Thanks for assuring me this is not typical. I'm relatively new at the daycare thing and so still fine tuning the way I do things and policies - I feel like I'm definitely more of a pushover at the moment. DCK is only in my care for another month before they transition to a very prestigious preschool that requires kids to be potty trained - that ought to be an eye opener :: Parents are adamant their child does not need diapers.

Oh my! They might not let him stay once they see he's not really potty trained! Yes, the parents are in for a wake up call...

If a child in underwear has TWO accidents in a TWO week time period then they must wear diapers or pampers easy-ups here and be dry for TWO weeks before I try underwear on them again. If they aren't able to stay dry for two weeks here (10 business days) then they won't ever make it back to underwear.
