Do You Allow Parents To Drop Off Kids Mid-Temper Tantrum?

Dcm brought 3yo dcg in right in the middle of an absolute fit! Dcg wanted Scooby snacks which of course I don't have. I let dcm leave thinking dcg would shape up after her mom left but it has really been downhill since then. After stomping on another childs back and then hitting another I have laid her down on her nap mat. She is absolutely screaming her bloody head off about it.

This child is never told no or disciplined in any way. I almost feel like calling dcm and telling her to come pick up her mess

In mid-tantrum... no. I have them go out on the porch or to their car until their child is ready to participate.

Depends on the kiddo and why.

One of my favorite dcb's used to arrive crying every morning. He was the first one here, and he was just plain crabby about getting up and making the transition to daycare.

I learned really quick that just setting up his mat, and offering him (nicely) to lay down for a little while (until the other kids get here) did the trick. He'd lay down, I'd leave the door open, and he'd just chill. 20 minutes later, he was ready for the day. He did that for a few months,then just stopped.

My 18 mo. has a quick fit every morning because his mother is leaving. I give him a quick comfort (a hug and acknowledgement that yes, it's sad when mommy leaves), then put him in the playroom on a comfy chair and tell him when he's ready to play, he can get up. It usually takes less than a minute, because he's not really sad so much as throwing a fit. He has a lot of control in his relationship with mom.

If it's just that the child is crying because they are new to my daycare, then yes, I let them be dropped off. I tell the parents to give the child a few days to adjust to coming to a new daycare.

But if the child is throwing a fit/temper tantrum because they are mad at something that happened before getting to my daycare, then no. I make the parent calm the child down before entering my home. If the child isn't too loud, they can stay on my porch to calm the child down. But if the child is too loud on my porch, I open the door and tell them that he/she is going to disturb my neighbors and upset the other children in my daycare so they need to go into their car until he quiets down. Children are not allowed into the daycare home until they are calm and able to enter respectfully and ready to join the activities.

Your child must arrive ready to go..........DEFINE READY: means the child is prepared and available to go play.

I would have sent DCM and DCG back to their car. If at any time a child kicks up a tantrum that we can't get under control in 45 min or less, they go home.

Put the problem back on mom.

Good for mom for saying that, but why do the parents even let the toy get inside? They know it's not supposed to be there. Why even have it in the car. The kids always throw a fit. Why do the kids throw a fit? Because it works.

Depends on the kid. I have a kid now who just hates mornings. About once a week these last 2 months, his mom apologizes for his mood at drop off (whiny, sometimes fake crying)-I tell her that he is fine as soon as she shuts the door and that it's all a show for her. She leaves quickly and things are fine.

I had 2 ODD/ADHD kids a while back. If one of them were tantruming at drop off, no way could they come in. They had to get their act together before they came in and ripped my house to shreds.

Yes, I actually do. I let Mom/Dad deal with their issue and once their kid can walk into the main area then their day begins. It doesn't take parents long to figure out how to avoid having to deal with their child all by their lonesome in the front as other parents and kids give them side eye.
