I just raised my rates by $25/week. I was already higher than many childcares in the area (lots of legally unregulated providers here), but when assessing what I put into my daycare, I still didn't feel properly compensated. I really wasn't sure I even wanted to add another child or two, so figured that this was a good time to try out a higher rate.
The family that I interviewed last night had already interviewed with several other local providers who are cheaper, but they chose me based on my child-rearing philosophies, commitment to safety, nutritional choices, and my nurturing, play-based environment.
I am so happy and excited that the parents chose me even with this higher rate! It confirms that not everyone is price shopping, but that some are shopping for the best place for their child (and I think that their child will be the perfect fit for us!). My current families didn't argue, either-one gets LOTS of added value from me (For example, I watch her kids for free twice a month on Friday evenings because MY kids love having them here, and so do I), and the other is on state assistance with zero co-pay, so she is nearly totally unaffected by the change.
I just had to share because I just heard from them that they chose me and because I wanted to let everyone else thinking of a rate increase to know that it CAN be done!
