Oh my Whether or not she's licensed shouldn't even enter into the case and I don't mean that in a snarky way. The woman knew a toddler had access to water. You NEVER EVER leave a child unattended near water, NEVER. Not even for a second.

I disagree. If she was unlicensed and was required to be, she will be charged with a much higher crime whereas if she is legally unlicensed, it will more than likely be a lesser charge.

Plus if her licensing rules state no standing water, pools or ponds without a fence she would have been cited or atleast told/warned about the safety issue.

The common sense part (not leaving a toddler by water alone) should be just that common sense..

This is one case where i can see where licensing "may" have made a difference.. .. maybe.

Either way its sad and tragic

My heart goes out to the child's family.

I had to put up a $4000 fence to keep the kiddos away from a few inches of standing water.

Me too. I had to fence off my pool. No fence = no license.

Ok, yes, I agree with that. She might have been forced to install a barrier being licensed. You're right.
It's too bad there is no barrier for neglect and stupidity though.
I feel so sad for the family for their forever loss.

I wanted to say illegally unlicensed but it was too long. In retrospect, I should have said "likely illegal". I have no problem with legally unlicensed care whatsoever. I may do that some day myself.

This happened recently not far from where I'm from. I run a daycare across the country now but it was a reminder for me of why I don't even bother trying to jump through the hoops licensing requires to take kids swimming. Water is dangerous.

This is my local news. It is so sad. I am shocked. WHO WHO WHO goes into the house to 'tend to another child' and leaves a 15 month old outside alone? I mean EVER? It was not deep water. My 15 months olds would have been struggling to get up and get out. So she had to leave him unattended for a while. Now lets talk location. The front yard was a decorated fence. The driveway and the walkway were not gated. So that child also had access to the ROAD. My God. SMH. I do not understand it. And yet I have parents here who get pissy cause I secure the babies and toddlers. They are never left unattended. The are not permitted to play often with the other kids. They have a playroom just for them. There is reasons for that. But I will get the occasional parent who feels their baby should have free run. I even lost a client once who was upset cause she expect her toddler to be able to run after her older SA sister in my yard and I wouldn't allow it. Well....maybe I should print that story off. So very sad. *sigh* Something so simple could have been prevented.

The backyard could have been fully fenced even if the front yard is not.

Either way I don't bother with a swimming pool either, not even a wading pool. The kids can do that at home.
