    Proud mommy moment!

My 9yo ran for student council president. To run, you have to be on high honor roll and be nominated by a teacher AND at least two peers. Everyone nominated had to submit an essay about one change that they would make to the school. They did the essays at school, and ds has been hush hush about what he wrote.

I received an email from his teacher this morning that he WON! He is student council president, and one of very few 4th graders to ever be nominated, it's typically all 5th. They are announcing it at the end of the day. I wish I could be there to see DS's face!!!

His essay was about recess- and he cited sources about how children learn through active play, how it would increase concentration in classrooms if they increased recess, and he suggested that they taper it by age group. He even had a plan about how they could fit more time in (AM snack during a work period at their desks, no morning 'busy' work, they can do their reading centers then) IT'S UP FOR A VOTE WITH THE SUPERINTENDENT'S OFFICE!

    UPK-1st-60 minutes
    2nd & 3rd-45 minutes
    4th & 5th- 30 minutes

right now they only get 15 minutes.

He's such a cool kid! His teacher told me that ds said he wanted to be a teacher on career day, and his teacher said he thinks ds should run for office. happyface

He sounds like a great child, and I am not surprised at all that he is yours. 15 minutes?!?!?? GOOD FOR HIM! He is my tiny little hero. I hope they follow his lead there.

What a great kid. I'd be so proud! And he's absolutely right about recess. It makes me so sad the kids where I live only get 15 minutes. I hope it passes!!!

This is why we will be homeschooling within the next couple years. My 1st grader gets 15-30 minutes a day and honestly.... it's not enough - the sit the entire day otherwise. You should be proud! Awesome kiddo - must have a pretty awesome mama to teach him these things!
