Wow. Good lord. I hate that the news report immediately focused on the unlicensed part. I'm definitely against illegally unlicensed daycares, but I don't see how that piece of paper would've stopped a fire. Maybe she would've had to have a fire inspection, as required, that would've found some sort of fire hazard? But they said it started in the garage, and I'm not sure if the fire marshal inspects garages. And leaving one inside?? A license wouldn't prevent that either. Was she over the legal ratio for licensed home daycares? 8 sounds like a lot for one person. This is just so tragic. I'm interested to see what they say caused the fire. Will you update please when they release that info?Comment

There are 4 licensed family/group homes in my county and 10 unlicensed.....legal/illegal:confused: they count everyone as related:confused: They are all on the food program is how come I know! I wish the state would go after the illegal ones and quit making licensing so hard on the ones trying to follow the rules! :confused:Comment

I think they put so much emphasis on "illegal" because the provider clearly didn't have a fire safety plan, and either didn't know or was lying about how many kids she had and what their locations were. Plus she was out of ratio, and ratios are based almost SOLELY on how many kids one person has safely get out of the building in the event of an emergency.
If you register with the State, you have to at least show proof of how many children you have and I think you have to have emergency preparedness plans in place.
Finally, her home may have been unsafe, as the fire started in the garage. If she was illegal, her home wasn't inspected.

I have 9. 8 isn't a lot BUT from the language used in the articles and the age of the child that died, I believe most of her children were babies and toddlers. 8 infants/toddlers IS a lot, especially in an emergency.
Edit: NOT excusing her at all though. Even if she had 20, it was up to her to make sure she knew where they all were. The article says the child was not found until THIRTY-FIVE minutes after the firemen arrived. How in the hell did she not know she was missing one out of eight for over half an hour? This is why we have ratios.

I keep a dry erase board right by the front door and mark off when kids come and go that I always know how many kids we have
Here in Orange we can have 14 kids ( no more than 2 infants)
we are always full but we ALWAYS know how many kids are here and this story is why :confused:

This is so sad, but in reality, this sort of thing can and DOES happen to people with their own children. My sister in law and 3 of my nephews were trapped inside their second story bedroom for almost half an hour a couple years ago. The indoor wood stove caught on fire in the middle of the home, causing them to be trapped on the second story until fire crews arrived. I've listened to the 911 tape, I've heard my nephew ask "mommy are we going to die?" as his brothers coughed their lungs out in the background...They all survived, but my SIL and one of my nephews spent weeks in the hospital in Madison due to SEVERE smoke inhalation.
My cousin died last winter in a fire trying to rescue a toddler that was left inside the burning house. My cousin was in the house with 5 other adults, including the childs 2 parents and a grandparent, and yet they ALL managed to escape except the child...When my cousin realized this, he went back INTO the burning house to find the child, and unfortunately they both died before he was able to make it back out of the house. I just DON'T GET IT! HOW do you NOT know where all of the children are at all times?!
I'm not excusing this womans actions. I'm just simply saying, it CAN and DOES happen to people who only have their own children to worry about. It's a horrible, tragic event and I can't even IMAGINE. After the incident with my brother, I've made sure to put extra steps and plans in place to make sure NO ONE is EVER stuck in my house if it were on fire, including my dogs. The biggest problem I see here is how the heck did she not know where all of the children were? Even if you can't GET them all out, you should AT LEAST know where they ALL are at ALL times! Cripes, I even have a sticker on my front door stating how many DOGS I have and their breeds! After the children in my care, my dogs are second most important.Comment
