I Started a 10 Month Old Today Who...

    is terrified of my dog!

When dcg interviewed, mom told me that she has never been around dogs, but that her dh would be happy if dcg was around a dog. I introduced my dog (who is a 85 lb lab) the day of the interview and dcg kind of laughed and cried when she saw him, but seemed ok.

Well today dcg has been screaming bloody murder every time my dog comes around her. He would just walk around her and she just screams bloody murder. Just now dcg was sleeping in the pnp and woke up and saw my dog laying on the floor and started screaming. I have been trying to separate them for the most part, but this is not always possible and I don't want to have to constantly do that! I hope I don't have to term over this. When I interview, I explain that my dog is around the kids during dc hours and haven't had any problems with any of the kids not liking him. Oddly enough my dog has been a selling point with a couple of my families, one of them chose to come here because I have a dog.

Does anyone have any suggestions of what I can do besides putting my dog away during hours?

I also have a lab.I do keep them some what seperated from each other especially in the beginning. Could the baby sleep in a blocked off room ? I introduce them gradually always with a treat for the dog sit ,paw ect.It has taken up to 2 weeks for some children to get used to her. I let dog through kitchen when everyone is seated.I also after the first few days say oh stop "rosie is a nice dog'give pup a treat and pay no more attention to the screaming. It works for me.

Dcg was much better this afternoon. She cried off and on when he comes around, but not as much as this morning.
Thanks for the advice, rosieteddy, I will try that!

It's only Day 1. I'd give it a week before I changed anything with the dog.

Consider yourself lucky.:: I started a 10 month old that screamed all day long for 2 months, over not being held/rocked constantly. Hope your new guy rounds the corner in a couple days.

I think you'll find a quick attitude adjustment to your dog. I've had a few kiddos come through here who've been very, very afraid of dogs. I have a boxer who is around the kids all day long, and is the calmest, most mild tempered dog - she quickly wins the scared kids over just by us continuing with our normal routine and showing the new kiddos that the dog is a part of it.

Licensing doesn't allow pets around the children here. They must be kept separately away from the children. I've never had pets so didn't have to worry about that. My provider friend with a dog had to keep hers in another room gated from the children.

Here they can be around them, except when I'm making food and when the kids are eating and all dog food and water cannot be within reaching distance.

I'm surprised that licensing allows it, but until they change it, he will be around them. Plus I have a dog baby. He cries when he is not around humans ....we would never have a nap time....

This is what I've decided to do. Hopefully she will get used to him. She screamed thus morning when he came around her, but then she took a nap and is fine. Maybe she just doesn't like him if she's tired...

Oh geez! I love infants, but when my one 2 year old dcb was a baby, he cried all day and I swore to never take more than one infant. Well I did and I pray that they won't cry all day. So far I've been lucky. ...
