I was just going to pm you with this question, but thought maybe other providers with a similar policy may want to chime in.

First, I LOVE the way you worded this. It's very clear and detailed. Thank you for sharing, I was.updating my policy and wanted to see forms others have uploaded. I'm incorporating some of your ideas into my policy.

My question is......how do parents react to the 48 hour rule? When you send a child home from daycare because of illness symptoms, do the parents kick and scream about the "must stay home for 48 hours" part? Do you feel it actually gets parents to NOT try to bring sick kids to school? Do they act indignant? Have you had a lot of push back on this?

Currently, I'm at "home for 24 hours", regardless if the parents keep them home voluntarily or if they are sent home by me.

Anyone else use the 48 hour rule? What issues have you had, if any?

I've only had to enforce it a couple of times and the parents were understanding. It's definitely helped cut down on them bringing sick kids. Ever since I started the 24/48 no one has knowingly brought in a sick kid, whereas before it was happening a couple times a month. What I expect is all laid out in straight out terms so I think that helps them understand a little better. The parts of my handbook that I'm not as strict about are all fluffy and friendly, but you better believe my symptom policy and payment policy are blunt and straight forward

I do have one family that rolls their eyes any time I enforce any of my policies, but it's my sister it doesn't bother me

Thanks so much for the reply, Crafty! I am definitely including it. My new handbook will be in their hands at the end of the month. I'll let you know how it goes! Yes, my goal is to cut back on people "risking it" and waiting to see if they get a call.

Mine is WORSE than the 48 hour rule...mine is the following TWO days. So, if I send home Monday morning at 9:00AM then they have to stay home Tuesday AND Wednesday. I actually haven't had a ton of pushback except from my "exception mom" who always has excuses for everything. She is inconvenienced by everything, though, so it really isn't surprising.

Yes, I have MANY people keeping their kids home now that never would have before! Much, much better. I am the only person who does this in the area.

I wanted to add that I made it the following TWO days because I had some kids who would seem a little bit off, and by the time naptime (1:00) came around they were spiking fevers/hacking/etc. So, they had already exposed everyone and were able to come back at 1:00 48 hours later. Not a good enough "consequence" so I changed it to following two days. Now it is much more rare for people to risk it.

I've used the 24/48 hour rule ever since Cat Herder first posted it on the forum a couple years ago.

I've never had an issue with parents not liking the rule and I have had little to NO illnesses the last several years.

I chalk it ALL up to good/understanding parents and FIRM policies that I follow and enforce.

I guess I should have added that I definitely didn't come up with the rule... I got it from others on here
