    Letter of the Week

Anyone do letter of the week?

Do you go in order with the letters or do you skip around?

I'm just starting this. It makes sense to go in order, but then when we do a theme like say pumpkins, I would want to do letter P that week.

    Thoughts?

I do Handwriting Without Tears and follow that order. It starts with letters that are easiest to write first. The first letter is L. I can usually find something that fits with my theme to do with each letter.

I used to do it and followed it in order.

I just restarted it (today in fact) and decided to go A, B, C, but will skip around a bit.

I did a letter a week last year. I decorated the walls with letter cut outs and pictures of things that started with that letter. Had snacks and crafts that went with the theme. I liked it because it helped me plan activities in non holiday times. Parents really liked it and would bring in special letter themed food too. I will probably do it again in January.

I do a letter of the week and skip around. I also do a theme of the week and usually base the letter of the week off of that. This week our theme is apples and our letter is A.

I dont do one letter of the week. BUt most of my kids have been with me for a very long time 2+ years.

We do letters of the week. So if we were going to read the book the carrot seed, then I would probably do it based off of the letters C and S.

Then everything that we would do for that week would revolve around that book.

Like planting carrot seeds in the garden or in a cup to leave in the window.

Perhaps we would peel some carrots and make juice to drink. learn to use the vegetable peeler. Paint with carrot tops, use seeds to cover the letter S.

We would talk about patience, because the little boy was very patient and etc.

sorry I went way off subject.

I do not teach the letters in order. I dont' think it really matters to be honest. Doing something as opposed to nothing is great.

I do letters when they show an interest in them. Usually around 2 they start recognizing their own names, then the other children's names, so that's where I start. I also do ABC books and have toy shelves labelled with picture and word so they're being exposed to the alphabet all the time.

That's true. You should always start with the letters in their name a this is the word they will see most, hear most and should learn to spell first. I post each child's name at least 5 times each throughout the Daycare. Anytime we do something that has their name on it. Like let's say diaper change. I say. Let's look for Susie's box, oh there it is see (spell) S U S I E, Susie that is your box of diapers.

I have had some kids with simple name at age 23 month spelling their name.
