Teaching Shapes and Colors??

I am working on teaching shapes and colors to my 2 year old group but I cant decide which teaching tactic works best. What have you found works best for teaching the littles? Flashcards? A shape of the day? Tracing shapes on a dotted line? Matching? I have tried each one and was just curious as to what everyone else does.

I display lots of examples of the color or shapes. Visual cues go a long way. I have laminated pictures that I tape to the door. This week is BLUE, so I have pictures of a blue Jay, the sky, blue crayons, blue butterflies and balloons, cookie monster, etc, etc.

If you do TV, there are lots of videos on youtube geared toward toddlers learning colors and shapes. I have a smart TV, so I can play the videos on my phone and "throw" it onto the TV or use the YouTube app directly on the TV. I don't necessarily make them watch, I usually just let it play quietly in the background so that there are blue images/pictures flashing across the screen periodically.

We also focus more on the current color when we do art. Painting with blue, using blue play doe, blue crayons, etc.

I also make a blue sensory box with things from around the house or from their toys.

I like doing it through art, but I have a creative group right now. I am not crafty, so I keep it simple. We work with circles in art right now and paint them, glue them, color them, whatever. I give them different colored circles and we talk about the colors. Easy peasy.

Wednesday what YouTube videos do you use for shapes/colors? And is there a way to make a playlist on YouTube so short videos can run continuously instead of me having to change videos every 90 seconds?

I do a mix of everything. I point to the shapes and colors on our charts, we talk about what they are playing with, colors during art, etc. I don't sit and drill them, just look for opportunities to talk about it.

Everyone learns differently, so it's important to do a little of everything. I should have said I don't just do art. That's just my favourite way to teach and what works best right now.

I use a combination of things. From pointing out the shapes we see, flashcards, coloring sheets you name it.

I do some of what's been mentioned already but I also incorporate it into meal times, etc. They like searching around their plate or table looking for certain shapes. They still learn, it's just of a more casual approach I guess, using any moment that presents itself.

For the 2's, I personally don't do flashcards or tracing or anything like that. I do have a shape, color, and letter of the week that usually goes along with our theme of the week. I introduce the shape, color, and letter during circle time (my circle time is not forced, whoever wants to join, joins) and will ask things like "who is wearing a blue shirt" or "can someone find a toy that is a circle or blue" and also talk about them while we play.

I just did a search for something like "teaching colors for toddlers". There is a way. It's where you ad each video to a queue. I've only done this with my phone though, which is linked to my TV. I'm not sure if it can be done in youtube alone.
