I think a game plan is a necessity with this one and now is a perfect time to get info to parents etc while it is fresh on the news. Not to alarm, simply to inform. If this gets out of control, I could see local schools closing for a day or two. We, as providers will need to make some decisions about how we would handle things on our end. Most of us have illness policies, but this could go beyond that.

Reason: Add info
This winter is going to be the worst between this and the polar vortex coming back. I am bracing myself for this hailstorm.
You could have kids with colds already getting a hold of this virus on top of it. ...so while they have already been sick with their normal cold for 4 days they can bring this in and be sick with it for half a day infecting everyone before it mutates.
Unless all the other day cares in the area follow suit I don't know how to get through this without losing all of my income or letting parents treat us like their private drop off nurse.
I know all I'm going to hear is..." just monitor him and if he starts showing symptoms then give me a call"....after they have been here infecting everyone else.
I've been trying to fill 2 spots for the last 2 months already. I'm so ready to throw in my cards.
Adults aren't as susceptible however I'm sure cancer patients are an exception.
I have kids set up in separate rooms in my house so this would work for me. The only other thing I can think is making parents stay home with any child showing symptoms for the first 24 hours but I'm sure I'd have them coming with pitchforks at me if I did that.... I bet I would lose kids.
Just wanted to comment on the bold part. Adults are just as likely to get it as kids, but it usually just shows as a cold and not the respiratory distress. That means that we can get it, think it's just a cold, and pass it to all of our kids
I agree about a game plan and making sure we inform parents sooner as opposed to later.
Last year was one of my first years that we had really really bad colds that were just NEVER ending. One of my DCKs ended up in the hospital. Unfortunately it took that happening for me to start cutting kids off at the door and sending home. Even those that were mildly ill. I didn't have any families leave, but I had a lot of families fighting me daily for a few months and boy did it stink.
I'm not worried. Sounds like there isn't much you can do other than be diligent about hand washing and excluding for symptoms covered in your illness policies.
Seems every year we have some sort of "health" scare in regards to a new illness or an outbreak of another...
Wash your hands, get plenty of good rest, eat well and spend as much time outdoors as possible.
^^^ Best way to prevent an illness in my opinion.
From what we've been told here, its similar to the other entero viruses and should follow the same precautions
I was reading about this. My daughter will be the one to get it first. She has asthma and allergies and catches everything!
Mine also. Mine is in HS now, so she is a little better about washing her hands if I harp on her to do it lots. I told her last night I wanted her washing hands every time she had a chance and made her watch the evening news story about it. She was sniffling last night, most likely from allergies and it took everything I had to keep reminding myself it was just allergies.
Parents seem to think that germs only live in the daycare. They forget that germs are on the shopping cart, the car seat, their car, money......I can go on and on. I have seen many dcms hand money over to me and then check inside their babies mouth to see how much the new tooth has come in. I have seen them hand toddlers the keys to the car only for the baby to stick them in their mouth. I have gone year after year dealing with the runny noses. Even if I can't turn away for the common cold symptoms, I will drill safety precautions into my families in the hopes to avoid this virus.
Is this the same virus that showed up in Colorado a few weeks ago that they were calling whooping cough and blaming unvax'd kids for spreading?
I don't know? Whooping cough is usually verified by a nasal swab and results sent to the CDC or local health department for statistics and such. It's also easily treated with a 5 day course of antibiotics so if those kids weren't getting better after that 5 day dose and tested negative I'm sure they went on to other sources of the illness and it's now been identified as Enterovirus.
Looking forward to seeing what y'all come up with as a handout -- I was hoping DCFS would contact me with something if they were really concerned about it...
I'm so worried about this. My friend's daughter is in the hospital with it here in MN. My son experiences severe respiratory distress with the common cold.
I can't imagine how he'd do if he came down with it...

Our licensor referred us to the Hennepin county infectious disease book we have in regards to how to manage this.
I posted the link to the pdf file above. From what we are being told here, it is just a more severe version of other enteroviruses...
I have several Public Health Nurse DCM's and they said that other than normal precautions and exclusion rules, there is nothing more or else we can do.

I was thinking the same thing. There was H1N1, which we didn't have here, and recently Hand Foot Mouth, which we didn't have either. I plan to keep washing, disinfecting, and boosting immune systems with lots of oranges and other nutritious foods. Unless you live in a bubble you're going to be exposed to stuff.
