    Immunization exclusion

I know some of the providers on here exclude kids from care for 48 hours after immunizations and I am just curious ?why?
    Thanks

    I exclude for 48 hours.

The reason is I had a child have a seizure after imms.

It was the longest 90 seconds of my life
NOT a phone call I ever want to make to a parent again
NOT a phone call a parent wants to get

and NOT something I care to ever have my other DCK's have.

Now before someone posts that the likelihood of a seizure or any reaction is minimal, I don't care. I had it happen and after discussing in detail and at great lengths with my personal physician, I decided that exclusion for 48 hours was the way to go.

Kids are generally more apt to have a fever, pain and/or discomfort and possibly seizures within the first 48 hours.

So it's worked for me since to have a 48 hour exclusion policy.

All my DCP's schedule their imm apt on Fridays or when they have 2 consecutive days off.

I had issues with my own kids and seizures, don't want to be responsible for any of the infants on my watch... it is a LIABILITY. I exclude for 24hrs after unless a fever starts or something happens (and it did last year, but baby was with mom)

I can't believe that you have doctors that work on Fridays! I WISH we were so lucky here! I wouldn't have to hire someone to cover me every time I have a dental or physical or whatever! I would insist on Friday immunizations, too, if we had a doctor that would do the on Fridays, since we don't, I feel so unreasonable excluding for them (I worry most about infants getting their first round, and always think I SHOULD exclude).

Same here, both of our local offices a re closed on Fridays... Every Friday.

I don't exclude for immunizations, only fever, lethargy, etc etc that may come afterwards.

My daughter developed seizures after her MMR as a little one... But it wasn't within 48 hours...

I would. Most SIDS deaths occur in that time frame of infants getting a bunch of vaccinations.

I exclude for 24 hrs because I have had kids have reactions here. No seizures, praise the Lord!!

Yet we don't even want to discuss the idea that maybe we should spread those things out. Sigh...

Wow, really? That's weird.. atleast in my neck of the woods.

We have clinics (with actual Dr's not NP's or nurses) that are open until 8PM 3 nights a week and on Saturdays until 2:00.

Scheduling an appointment to see a Dr is easy here if you work regular hours as there are hours outside of 9-5 available.

We have a couple dentists and eye doctor's too that have Sat hours or extended week day hours.

I envy you! I just don't understand why doctors here don't offer at least 1 or 2 days a month of extended hours. My dentist is done for the week at noon on Thursday. My eye doctor doesn't work Fridays. The pediatrician doesn't work Fridays. Our clinic is open on Fridays, but won't do a physical, vaccinations, or anything other than "acute care" on Fridays.

Doctors and dentists here also are often gone by noon on Friday. You can never see a primary physician outside of business hours, but there are urgent care hours. You just will never see a doctor you have seen before.

I exclude for 48 hours also for the reasons people said previously but also because infants, toddlers and preschoolers tend to be VERY fussy and unhappy after they've had their shots. They are tender, hot, irritable, sometimes get diarrhea, can get a fever, sometimes get runny noses, cry a lot etc. Even I don't want my own kids here after getting immunizations .

I enforce my rule even with my own kids and schedule immunizations on Friday afternoons. Last Friday my DH was crazy and had scheduled my 1yo's DS appointment at 9am. I just about murdered him, my son was a wreck. I had him come home at lunch to help for that 1 hour because he was so irritable he wouldn't let the others sleep or me get stuff done. I let DH know that next time he doesn't schedule vaccines after 3pm DH will be taking the day off and taking care of our precious little snowflakes himself.

We have a great pediatrician so we take our children there and won't move them but we have clinics here in the county that also have late nights for parents to take their kids to if they can't miss work. I think they go as late as 8pm too. Too bad they don't have these late days on Fridays otherwise my clients would really score . They're usually Tuesday or Wednesday nights depending on location.

Thank you all for your thoughts and reasons. I appreciate it. I may have to start doing that also.
