Flighty mom - term during probation?

I have a new dcg who is 2. She is super smart. She was supposed to start last week.

Dcm interviewed well, asked all the right questions, seemed very involved but not too controlling. Dad is out of the pic but fiancé is adopting dcg.

So last Tuesday dcg starts and she has the worst diarrhea I've ever seen in my life. Then she throws up. Long story short, dcg was getting over noro virus and dcm sent her. She needed another 24-48 hours at home. Every kid in the daycare ended up getting it, plus all my family. I had to close on Friday. I'm irked because I lost that pay for the day.

Dcg was out the rest of the week and was supposed to start today. She doesn't show up. I text and call dcm. Start time was 8:30 am. I hear back at 10:05 am finally. Dcm says she thought daycare was closed today so she made other arrangements. Huh? I texted her on Thursday and told her I was closed on Friday. I still have the text. It was short and sweet and nothing about Monday.

This just seems to be getting off to a bad start.

    Thoughts?

Bye, bye. I would have been furious about having to close and lose money. I also find that when I post on here asking about a new family, that I usually feel like they need to go and just need affirmation. I say let them go if you can.

Is this the DCF's first experience with daycare or have they attended elsewhere before?

Dis dcm know it was noro virus and didn't give her time to recover? I would have termed then if so. Did she tell you dcg had noro?

1st child and 1st experience with group care? If so I'd give it some time before I made the decision, myself.

Noro is pretty common and most people mistake it for a bad burrito.

Dcg has been at a center but dcm wasn't happy with it. I think the Mai. Reason is because dcm uses dhs and the center was taking awhile to submit her paperwork.

Dcm knew dcg had diarrhea. Did not tell me at drop off. When I called for pickup, she admitted she had it for the past 24 hours. Also, dcm said - on a Tuesday - when she came to pick her up, "So how about I just keep her out the rest of the week? She can start next Monday." I thought it was odd at the time. Why offer to keep your child out for the rest of the week - unless you know something is really up?

I only found out it was noro virus because parents of my 1 year old dcb texted me and said dcb was at the er for dehydration due to throwing up/diarrhea. The doctors diagnosed noro virus.

It is possible that mom was used to DCG having minor illness often and thought nothing of it. Explain that illnesses are not common in your setting and that she will be held to the illness policy. Go over it ad nauseum if necessary at first.

Not calling, etc, would also be no-biggie to her as the center would not be likely to call if she was late (or hold meal/crafts), IYKWIM? Going from being one of 20 to one of 6 is a huge change in thinking...

I'm not sure. Is it possible she thought the diarrhea was over when she brought her the first day? Did she pick up right away when you called her that day?

I think I would tell her that her child got everyone else sick, that an ER visit was even necessary for one child, that it resulted in everyone sick and you had to close. I think I would tell her that you are not sure this will work out as this was serious. I would tell her face to face so that I could see her reaction and see what she says. If my gut said she made an honest mistake and brought her too soon then I'd finish out the probation period at least. If my gut said she was trying to hide something then I would tell her that I don't think it would work out because you need people to keep their sick children home so it doesn't affect the whole group.

Good point - centers vs. home daycare are very different. I will definitely go over the illness policy in boring detail tomorrow when I see dcm.

Why did one of your other parents text you about dcb ER visit with the doctor's diagnosis? Do they work at the hospital, or were they just there at the same time, and talked to dcm? If they work at the hospital sharing medical information without patient's (parents) consent is a serious offense, and they could get in a lot of trouble for doing so. I understand why they did.... they don't want their 1 year old exposed, but it's still not okay.
