So I sadly had to put in my notice due to my son. Hes 3 and has some special needs and every day became a struggle with him and having the daycare kids here. All of my families were very inderstanding. So my last day wad this past Friday except I had one mom ask me to watch her kids an extra week while she waited for an opening at a center. I agreed. Her children are 2 and infant and are here 6-4.
So the fairs in town. Yesterday she comes in at 5 with dad and in different clothes all ready to go :O. I'm feeling a bit taken advantage of considering I'm doing her a favor. My normal closing time before quitting was 515 but this is not daycare anymore, this is me helping her out. Would you say something or let it go?

I'd say something & tell her you were doing her a favour. You were told she was coming an hour earlier. Don't do it again or, instead of late fees, you just won't watch their kid again.

Did you operate under contracted hours or open to close? Did you have late fees?

I would have charged my late fee and told them that you are doing them a favor, and that can end now.

Honestly, I wouldn't say anything unless it happened again - I'd figure that there's just 3 more days left until they're done. But that's just me. I don't like conflict, and wouldn't want them saying anything bad about me in case I wanted to start child care again.

I would have to say something. Did they even warn you that they were going to be an hour late? I used to start calling if they were 15 min late.

They are doing this because their working relationship with you is almost over and they don't care about the rules you have set anymore.

I'd say something! "Sue, as you are aware I closed officially last week. I'm allowing you to stay this week as a favor. I expect that Sally will be picked up at the usual time - or I won't be able to watch her again."

I have a mom that comes late acting like it's no big deal as well (oh I just had to stop and get some gas because it was so cheap at XYZ, but the lineup was insane!). I just smile and say "oh, it's ok", like I always do, then hate myself after for not saying anything. I'd make up an appointment, then mention it each morning. "I have plans tonight that I have to leave for by 4:10, so please be here at the usual time". Not a permanent solution, but you only have a couple more days anyway.

Why? Because you should be adding a hefty late fee to those extra minutes she is forcing you to provide.

Being late is HIGHLY disrespectful and not something I would be okay with. It basically says HER time is MORE valueable that yours.

You're absolutely right of course. I started off being lenient because I was on the other side of the coin, counting every minute between getting in the car after work, and making it to my DCP by the minute she closed. I didn't want to do that to other parents. And of course, over time they start to take advantage, now they go home first, and walk down because it's a nice day...but it means 10 extra minutes, etc.

I guess they loose out in the end, because I'm actively looking for a job. I'm not cut out for this anyway. I'm going to concentrate on having fun with my kids and my DCKs while I can, while trying not to feel like I'm constantly underwater trying to stay a float.

How about closing early on Friday by an hour and getting an hour back?
Seeing your doing her a favor and she's taken advantage, turn the tables.
Come up with an important "thing" to do.
This may not be your cup of tea, and that's fine, but I know I'd feel less short changed in the end.

Kind of timely, but same mom was 20 minutes late today. "I forgot to tell you that they moved my parking lot, which means an extra 10 minutes". I forget what I said, but I clearly wasn't pleased (also because her kid screamed at me all day becUse gma didn't give him a nap yesterday. And because when she pulled in, she sat in her car texting, then continued to text while walking up the walkway, all while her kid was crying in my arms for his mama), so she mentioned going out on her break and moving it, and instead of brushing it off, I told her that was probably a good idea. It isn't huge, but it's a step for me!
