Having Fun with Our Virtual Trip!

Before summer started, I was wondering what I'd gotten myself into. I'm sometimes not very good with follow-through. So I was already thinking this was probably going to be a bust.
BUT we're having a blast! We're learning lots of facts about each state they picked, doing some different fun activities.
First we went to Alaska, learned it's only 55 miles from Russia and that during the winter we could walk over there. We dug polar animals out of ice, played with shaving cream and glitter. We made Northern Lights pictures and ate salmon.
Last week we did Colorado, made dinosaur fossils and a paper mache replica of Pike's Peak, which has a Cog Railway that goes up it(the real mtn., not ours)
This week we're learning about Hawaii, making grass skirts and volcanoes, tissue paper flowers and brightly colored pillows.(Hey, it's a reach but they wanted to make pillows and I figured if we kept to the bright colors. I'm learning lots I never knew. We played coconut bowling this a.m. and after we smashed the coconut a.k.a. bowling ball, we used a pineapple.

Just wanted to shout out a thanks!!! to whoever shared the idea. The kids are already asking if we can do countries next summer.

That's cool. I did the same type of thing with my daughter when I homeschooled her. We went through the states and did something on each subject (science, social studies, p.e. etc. ) to represent that state. We had a blast!
