    Regression.....

I moved my daycare almost 2 weeks ago. Since the move a few of the kids have been regressing in several areas and I am not too sure what else I can do.

First one that a few kids are having issue with is the potty. They are having accidents 3x or more a day. We have set potty breaks and walk them to the bathroom making sure they know where it is. I have had to put one back in Pull-ups. All of the kids having issues are all FT and have been with me for at least 1 year.

the one that I put back in pulls ups is also having potty issues at home. just not using the toilet at all. I allow the underwear until there is an accident, because I know this child will just use the PU like a diaper and not use the toilet.

I think it might have to do with the fact that now 95% of our program is outside and they don't want to come in to go.

The other kids that are having potty issues are only having one or two, but still having them.

The other issue we are having is also with this same child and only one other one which is remembering the rules. Our environment has changed, a few new rules, but these kids are just ignoring all of them.

At my staff meeting I made certain that all of my employees will be on extra alert and making sure that they are gently setting the boundaries each and every time when needed.

We do talk about the rules, boundaries and what not each and every morning before we go outside. The kids having the issue just about all of them are 3-3.5.

    What else can I do?

    Any more ideas...

I'm thinking your situation is a perfect example of how important the environment is for kids....you changed yours and it seems all he77 has broken loose.

      Ugh! Sorry to hear that.

I think the only thing you can do is just try and stick to your regular routine as much as possible. Eventually the kids will see that even though the physical surroundings have changed, nothing really changed.

It will take alot of patience but I would just go slow, try not to over do it and maybe even cut back a bit on the super structured activities and do a whole unit on "getting to know our new school"....kind of like what you do at the beginning of a school year or what you do when you integrate a new kid into your group...just that you are integrating a bunch at one time.

Patience is your friend in this situation though.

It will all be okay.... just one day at a time and before you know it, everything will be back to smooth sailing.

thanks BC..... So last week we did not do much at all, just talked about our rules and played a lot out side. So that was also another huge change.

Lots of new transitions too which have even thrown staff for a loop.

I am loving the new place a lot more with the outside classroom. I am trying really hard to get it all done, but one day at a time like you said.

question about the boy with lots of accidents (potty) ---- would you put them back in pull ups? I know if I do, the child is just going to go back to using them like diapers....

This boy is also having multiple accidents at home too.....parents are super awesome, they are always open to what I have to say and ALWAYS follow through.

Personally, I would keep him in underware. Since you are outside most of the day it should be easier to clean up... If he will use the pull up as a diaper, I would rather him wear underware and deal with the messes.

Honestly...I would put him back in Pull-ups. I know you said he would use them as diapers but if he does, then technically he wasn't really 100% trained in the first place then...kwim?

If he is old enough, I would talk with him and let him know no one is trying to make him be a baby or whatever but that he has to wear the pull up until he starts going on the potty again like he used to do.

I think that regression in kids is pretty common but the best way to manage it is with very little fan fair....no punishment, no prodding, no big deal. Just wear the pull up and use potty when ready.

Have parents do the same. NO big hoopla...just support and encouragement and he will come around. You already know he can since he used to. You just gotta be patient until he comes back around.

I want to tell you what happened yesterday.

so DCB was told to go inside and go potty. We walk them in and watch them sit down, we then wait by the bathroom door giving privacy. My asst took him in.

Well dcb and asst come back outside and I ask did he go. Both answer yes.

              Ok great........

              THEN about 45 min later

We all come in for lunch. My older kids wash hands first. I hear an older kid yell Miss Nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn...GROSS....

I walk in and there is POOP all over the floor, the toilet and etc.

I ask what happen and DCK says it was already there.

I immediately knew that it was DCB. I check and BINGO. It was so OLD, all over his legs too.

This means that DCB came in sat down with his underwear full of POOP, let it get all over the toilet and himself and then pulled his underwear and pants back up without a care in the world, washed hands and went out back to play like nothing happened.

After this discovery, I made my Asst go look at the play ground equipment, YUP POOP everywhere.

I am a little concerned about this, I don't get it at all..........

I guess I should have told you guys that first and then ask if I should or should not put DCB back in PU.

he has only been PTed a few months prior to this happening.

Oh got it. In this case, yes I would put him back in pull ups. I thought he was fully potty trained before the move and was just having pee accidents because he didn't want to stop playing outside.
