    Potty Training From Scratch

I know many on here won't take the lead in potty training (don't blame you) but for those that would - I would love suggestions.

I have successfully potty trained a dozen kids over the years but I have worked with most of them from 18m on so I was able to introduce the concept early and parents supported my methods at home (sitting child on potty during diaper changes to support familiarity and comfort with sitting on the potty and then moving to underwear (no pull ups) once child was mostly dry and going successfully some of the time in the potty. All kids were trained by 2 1/2.

I am currently watching a boy who turns 3 next month. The mom has done zero work with him. She never sits him on the potty, she changes his diaper rarely so he is used to being really wet. I am not going to term him for this, but I do want to help him and get the ball rolling. I am putting him on the potty with trained kids to he has examples. We talk about it a lot. I have a sticker chart and prizes, but he hasn't earned one yet. I tried putting him underwear and plastic pants so he could feel wet, but he didn't seem to notice when he soaked himself??? Poor little dude. Any suggestions?!

I used to potty train my students with special needs who were 6,7, 8 and older. At this age it was imperative to push potty training for cleanliness reasons. The only way I had success with the ones who weren't interested yet in training was taking them every 15 minutes and helping them clean up their own mess when they had accidents. However, at 3, I probably wouldn't push it yet. He doesn't sound ready and you could create issues.

Yes, I don't want to push him without clear signs of readiness. I do want to encourage him though, and maybe even more I just need to settle in for the long haul he is dry for hours so it is hard to catch him going.

I have potty trained many daycare children! I have them sit on the potty during diaper change if they don't go I still tell them good job for trying, let's try again later. If they do go potty I give them praise! Then do a potty dance after they are dressed. For the difficult to potty train kids, I leave it to the parents. In 4.5 years I've only had one that I "couldn't" potty train.
