    Now I Remember...

...why I was hesitant to rely on an assistant. She called in sick this morning and now I'll be over my ratio unless DH stays home and reschedules his plumbing job for the morning.

How do you all with assistants deal with this kind of situation? I can't tell her she HAS to be here, although I work sick a lot. Or can I?

I wouldn't ask someone to work if they were actually sick. I would, however, tell her that excessive absences are grounds for termination.

You can't, and shouldn't, ask her or tell her to work sick. What I do is have a couple back ups that I can call if I need them.

Me too! My assistant told me Saturday that she couldn't come today because she is moving. Great! I have a full load scheduled for the day so dh took the day off of work. Good thing for me dh has plenty of time to take and doesn't mind doing it.

The only thing is although dh is here, he really isn't a lot of help. He doesn't know the kids and routine the way she does and it's usually just easier to do it myself than explain it to him. I end up sending him outside with the big kids while I stay inside with the littles.

I can rely on my mom too but don't have a back-up besides that.

It ****s, but I always try and have a back up (my mom, my dh).

I make it very clear when they interview that if they are going to call in sick that it needs to be the night before. I know sometimes that's not realistic but it tends to scare off the ones that would call in for no reason.
