Do You Exclude For Pink Eye?

I just received a text from a dcm stating her 2 year old got pink eye yesterday and is now on drops. I'm assuming the same drops from the last time she had pink eye. How long do you guys exclude for. My policy states till the eye is no longer gooey and red. The thing is this child is ALWAYS sick. I'm always sending her home. So I feel bad that the mom has to miss work again, but at the same time I do not want my own children or any of the other daycare kids to get it.

How long should I exclude for? I'm assuming its viral since she's had a cold for the last few weeks, she had croup 2 weeks ago.

    TIA

Usually 48 hrs from when drops were started and all redness gone.

Yes, 48 hours from when drops were started. Pink eye is so contagious.

I remember our doctors note 24 hours after starting antibiotics AND eyes were clear (so it ends up being 48 hours).

Pink eye is so contagious! If it's viral, then they don't give drops and you just have to wait it out.

For pink eye they must be on the meds for 48 hours (for the average med) and with a dr note BUT.....I will not do drops here. I do not fight with children nor do I touch the eyes. So they must be 'drop-less' before returning.

I too would exclude while eyes are draining . She could return when eyes are clear.

I agree with until it is no longer leaking or crusting. Pink eye can be bacterial or viral. Antibiotic drops may be prescribed, but they will only work if it is bacterial. If it is viral it just has to be waited out. Since there is no clear way to tell which it is, I would keep them away until it is no longer leaky or crusty. Super contagious!

she can come back after being on drops for 24 hours, as long as she is happy and able to participate

Last time I had a dcg with pink eye the doctor told them 24 hrs after starting the drops and she could come back. I agreed that would be fine as in my sick policy. Well was about 3 days and me and my dd had it too. Had to close for a day.

24 hours from the start of the medication. My pediatrician doesn't even want to see the kids. He just says to start the drops in both eyes.

This is how I feel about it, too.

As far as feeling bad because dcm misses a lot of work...I would feel bad, too, but ask yourself, "How much worse am I going to feel if my own kids and I get pink eye because I let dcg return to day care while she's still contagious?"
