    How long ...

How long does it take you to get a new dcg or dcb "into shape"? I have a new dcg who is 3.5 and she is exhausting me. Her parents work a ton, and to make up for that, give her whatever she wants. She threw a 45 minutes crying fit because I wouldn't give her crackers. She pushes the 1-2 year "babies". She repeats and repeats and repeats, thinking my "no" will turn into a yes. I've been able to curb some behavior, but it's only been a week and I'm about to go crazy with her.

I realized I'm not a big fan of 3.5yr olds recently. I took on a DCG in an emergency situation (kicked out of preschool without notice) so I accepted her here knowing it was only til summer starts and a preschool has room for her. Well... it's been trying that's for sure. She isn't as bad as you're describing as far as tantrums go but she does whine a lot and I think her mom has spoiled her a lot. Her bio-dad is not involved so she lived with mom, gpa, gma and an uncle so I think she's used to being the baby who gets everything she wants. Mom did daycare before and has a lot of guilt about returning to work and the effect it's had on DCG. She gets lots of treats for things (she's obsessed with Doc McStuffins so mom rewards her with different stuffed animal characters for staying dry all week, good behavior, etc) but I see she's definitely learning the system at home and manipulating it. She has a "tummy ache" most days at nap hoping I will make someone come get her, doesn't nap, is a very picky eater (which mom said she wasn't... LOL) but is generally well-behaved since knowing the rules. The first week she got in trouble for hitting one of the less than 2yr olds and for doing something she was repeatedly asked not to and threw a bit of a fit. She's almost a year older than my oldest child, 2yrs older than my youngest, so she's often bossy and tattling on everyone, even our cat. ::

I would say a couple weeks for a 3 year old to adjust but in the case of aggressive behavior, I dont know that I would give it even that long. I just flat out do not take care of kids when I have to worry about them hurting someone.....especially not a preschooler hurting babies.

With one of my last three recent enrollee's...it took her SEVEN WEEKS. And, she is now displaying horrible behavior after that great tantruming "honeymoon" ended. So, it has only gotten worse just in a different way.

My other two took about 1-2 weeks (ages 2 and 3).

I think I can survive a few more weeks. She has potential to be a sweet girl, but whew! She is trying me in the meantime.
