    Charge more for holidays?

I just saw this in another post. If you are open for certain holiday, do you charge an additional fee? Have parents questioned it?

I close for most holidays, but would consider being open if I was making extra money.

Ha ha I was thinking the same thing! I read it in a post last night and it got me thinking, maybe for the holidays that some still have to work, like Veteran's day or Columbus Day?

I wouldn't open for a holiday but if I did I'd absolutely want at least time and a half for it!!! Unfortunately I think most employers have gone away from paying that for holidays and its just a regular work day, so I think parents would probably complain. But I'd rather just be closed!

        Me too!!

I would think it would have to be for the *major* holidays that everyone does get - Independence Day, Memorial Day because I never got extra pay on days like Veterans or Columbus.

I saw the same and think it's a great idea! I would charge my drop in rate with a minimum of 4 maybe. That's $200 and WAY worth a lighter load and a play all day 'holiday'.

I started a 3 day minimum for the days I am open to stay open for inclement weather, and holidays. If more than half my group isn't here, I get to close.

I do it and I charge twice my regular rate. I pick and choose which holidays I am willing to stay open and require 1 week notice. So basically, if I don't have other plans I put it out there and see who wants it.

I already have paid holidays so basically the parent can keep their child home and pay the regular rate or bring them and pay extra.

No parent has ever complained because the alternative is that I am closed and my closings are given out for the entire year in January so they had plenty of time to figure it out.

A provider in a neighboring county keeps children every New Years Eve. She made enough to buy a dishwasher one year! She charges $50 dollars a kid and never has less than 7, most of the time she has 10-12 kids on this night. She is open till 1:00 AM.

I've considered it but only for certain holidays. The food program also doesn't allow claims on holidays anymore so i would definitely charge more, probably close to double.

I was considering doing this and staying closed New Year's Day. I stayed open this year for new years day and all of my families showed up in pajamas. One said she was hungover and that she was going right back to bed. I missed watching the ball drop with my ds because I sent him to celebrate with family while I slept.

So this year I WILL benefit somehow.

I would think most parents would grumble. I'm closed all school holidays and two weeks a year for vacation and it suits me fine. I don't think I would have the nerve to charge more but thats just me.

That was me, I think. I figured if I was going to be open, I might as well make extra for holidays. The basic holidays are $25 over regular rate, but Thanksgiving, day after Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year's Eve & New Year's Day are $50 over the regular rate.

Do you get very many that need you for Christmas Eve, Christmas, Thanksgiving, and the New Years days?

I got paid triple on holidays that I worked when I worked outside the home. I'm sure that lots of parents are making triple time, as well, if they're working (holiday pay + double time). That's the only way I would do it.
