My cousin had this happen at her apartment. She make food and go get in the shower or leave to check the mail and come back and it would be gone. They were going crazy blaming the other room mates. Turns out someone had made a hidden trap door from their apartment to hers from the attic and were coming in when they would hear then leave. The called the police and then acted like they were leaving and listened at the door until they heard someone moving around then the police went in and arrested him.

It would be worth it to get the cameras. You can return them later. Maybe you can set off a flea bomb or something and wait outside and see if you flush anyone out

That's scary sorry you are dealing with that

If you have a common wall with a neighbor look for hidden doors and openings in the backs of closets or under the stairs.
            I see little people.

I'd beg, borrow, or...well not steal, , but I'd do anything in my power to get those cameras TODAY. Photograph everything, document. CALL THE COPS. MAKE THEM LISTEN.

You either have a squatter/intruder or a very active ghost. My overactive imagination would have secret cameras planted all over watching you
Hee hee! Look, I have a signature!

Also I just decided that come hell or high water I will NEVER live anywhere but a single-family home again...no sharing common walls/ceilings/anything.

If you changed the locks & had an extra key somewhere in the house-this person probably picked it up. Meaning this person was in the house when the locks were changed. I'm no help but that's what I first thought when you said you can't figure out how this person is getting in.

Look for common shared walls. Or a window that they can crawl thru. A good friend was robbed repeatedly. She found out a neighbor was getting in using his access into his attic to get into shared attic and going down into her place to steal things. I would put a strong lock on both the attic access and basement door. If they are getting into the basement then they at least won't be able to get up into the main part of the house with a lock.

Since you are renting, could you maybe tell the landlord about this issue and maybe he/she would be willing to cover the costs of installing or purchasing a camera system.

My landlord is a slumlord. There was sewage coming up from the basement toilet and overflowing onto the basement floor not too long after I moved in. He would come over and half-a$$ the job. Then it would happen again. This went on for months. I had to go crazy on the man before he got it fixed properly. The neighbors told me that they have had water problems in the basement here for a year or so and the landlord would never fix it.

The landlord would definitely not help me with anything about me thinking someone might be in the house.

I am CREEPED OUT and it is not even my house! So sorry you are going through this! The only good piece of info is that nobody has been hurt. I have chills reading this thread right now. Creepy.

I was thinking along the lines of what ihop had mentioned. I had read or saw a story similar to what you're going through on the news a while back.
There was a man living in a house in a hidden area like an attic or storage panel in the walls. Have someone (police preferably or security company) open all areas not open to plain view such as attic space, vents, crawl spaces.

I have an inexpensive dlink camera that i have pointed towards the front door. It is set up to record when it sees movement (upper half so our dog doesn't set it off). You can also have it email you when it detects movement, and watch remotely. Calling the police when you have visual confirmation should get you a quicker response
