In a couple of weeks, I will be saying goodbye to a dcg who is aging out to Kindy. She and her brother (in kindergarten right now) have been with me for four whole school years now. I'd like to give a gift, but our budget is tight. Do you give gifts to kids that age out, and if so, what kinds of things do you do? These people have been one of my 'golden' families and this little girl has been my sidekick/shadow for four years. Sigh.
Parting gifts for long-time kiddos?

I have one that is supposed to be leaving in a week after three very long years here. I was planning on making a photo album, but dcm keeps changing dcg 's last day. By the time they actually leave (i've wanted to term but waited since they are moving) I'm not sure I will feel up to any cutesy crafts. A book or a picture of all the kids sounds good. Now for dcm, I'm thinking a one way ticket across the country ::

Do you have pictures? If so maybe a photo book. I always see coupons on Groupon or livingsocial for them. Its something they can keep for ever.- Flag

Do y'all do photo books a month before they leave so they arrive in time? I'm thinking I ought to do this as well.- Flag

You have to be careful of privacy rights when making photo books, unless that particular child is the only one in the photos.
I've never given a gift to children leaving, but have gotten gifts from families leaving. Maybe because for the most part around here they ship off 3 year olds to "preschool" and I have a very difficult time with that whole concept.
But, I DO like the idea of the Dr. Suess book for kids going off to kindergarten!- Flag

My oldest dog has been with me from infancy and is like our granddaughter. She is headed to pre-k in the fall. I'm making her a Raggedy Ann doll and possibly a small tied quilt. I won't do that for all of them, but she's special.- Flag

Last year I gave my dcks who were leaving for K the book Curious George Goes to School. Kohls had them for $5 during the summer last year.- Flag

This is what I am giving dcb who is leaving at the end of the month. I proscratinated to long so I won't be able to use my Groupon coupon. But, I am getting an album to put them in. I use an app on my phone and only pay shipping to print the pics from my phone.- Flag

When I have a tight group of almost-Ks going off, I try to get an especially fun pic of them together to give to them all.
I also do a book, and a journal-type book and matching pen or pencil.
I like the Dr. Seuss book, and also Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten, and the large version of I Spy - School Days. But I also like to give them a copy of their current favorite book that we have read.- Flag
