ok, i have a child in my 3's and 4's class that isn't potty trained. He will be 5 in October. He is the only one in the class not potty trained, is still wearing a pull-up every day and refuses to cooperate. Mom is pretty laid back about the whole situation and doesnt seem to be working with him at home. What has workedfor you potty training? What would you do?

Constant reminders to go potty and bribing
My oldest needed constant reminders and we let him run around naked as well as some treats like smarties or m&ms . My second potty trained himself and he isn't turning 2 until July.
I am working with a dcb(2.5) right now and as of this past Thursday he is finally getting the "oh I have to go potty" concept and saying something without reminders from me. However mom works hard with it at home as well as my doing while he is in my care. I would have a serious talk with mom about it and suggest a doctor trip since it may be something more than refusal to go with him being 4.5yo. -
I feel that it is the parents job to potty train their child. Obviously I am part of the equation but I don't do it FOR them. If you are doing it why should Mom kwim? I sit with parents when they bring it up to me. We discuss whether dck is ready or whether their expectations are unrealistic. Each child is different in their readiness. I agree w PP that a Dr's checkup may be in order, before proceeding. I havent had a 4-5 yo that wasn't potty trained yet, so not sure what I would do with that, but I wld prob not want to change those diapers.Comment

Would he be eligible for kindergarten this year in your state, or next year? Surely that would have to motivate mom? I would certainly bring it up in your next conference w/her, as in "the main thing I think we need to be working on right now is toileting..."Comment
