    Job Issues

I am a member not signed in for some privacy.

I got a text from our director today tell me not to show up. over the past few months we have had 1 parent complaining on me weekly saying i was leaving marks on their child. I have worked in childcare for almost 8 years now. I've never hurt a child and never will. Now because of this parents complaints my job is on the line. This is a parent I personally have made reports on because of the condition their children are in when they arrive at the center and a couple of incidents i have observed personally. I am on a line about how to handle this. The director and I have had conversations about this several times (every time the parent has complained). What i believe is happening is she doesn't want to lose this family(they are state paid.) Our enrollment has been dropping due to lack of need for childcare in our area.

    Any advice?

Being a provider is hard...we do all we can for these kids and the parents still look for the negative because in reality most parents feel slightly jealous that we get to spend the whole day with their child.

I had a DCM tell me this morning that I needed to put cream on DCG because she got a really bad rash since I likely left her to nap full of pee. I did no such thing. DCG did have an accident in PNP but I carefully washed her all up when naptime was over and she had no rash. (She did not cry once on the baby monitor so she likely peed when she woke up). I changed her clothing and she was happy as can be. I said she had no rash here and DCM replied, well when I got her home she was completely red all over....whatever

Being accused of things is difficult, especially when you spend your whole day caring for their children the best you can.

Can you find work in a different center? This family obviously has it out for you.

I think it is terrible that you have been there that long and the director still doesn't take your word over theirs.....especially if this is the only DCF that has ever complained.

              You need to document everything.

You also need to be in contact with your area licensor. I know you only work at a center and aren't the license holder but documenting this situation will protect YOU.

Let her know what is going on BEFORE you become the scapegoat for ANY issue this family has or before this center gets reported. If this is the way the Director handles this type of thing, I wouldn't want to be employed there.

              Hang in there.

                          First of all...

I think it's very inappropriate for the director to text you not to come into work! Are there any policies in your company handbook related to texting? I think this is beyond informal.

I would be calling the director or showing up asking what the dilemma is. I would be asking more in depth questions like:

Why am I being told not to come into work?
How long should I expect to be off?
                          Is this time off paid?
What am I being accused of?
When can I expect to return to work?
                          Is CPS/DHS involved?

If you feel your director is handling the situation unfairly, you might want to consider switching to another location if there is one available. I would also find out who is on the board of directors or the owner is and ask to contact them directly.

In the meantime, keep the text and document every phone call, every text, and everything else.

If this were the first time this happened, I would be having a heart to heart with this mother about trust. If this is not the first time, this would be goodbye. And I do not term often, maybe two to three times ever in 30 plus years.

Your director is probably scared of licensing. From a licensing prospective, it needs to look like she took action against a parents complaint of abuse. Having said that, she handled it badly. Contact licensing yourself and explain the situation without giving your center name and ask their advice. In CA you can just ask to speak to the Duty Officer. Document everything because if you leave a position before this is cleared up, your next job will find out about it. Show you are upfront about the accusations and how you are handling them. Ask your Director what steps she is taking to protect the staff from false accusations. Write everything down.
