    Failure to Update (Immunizations)

How many days past the due date for immunizations do you allow a parent to continue to bring their child?

In my state LIC says that it is the responsibility of the provider to follow up regularly until all shots are finished.

    It also states this:
    102418 IMMUNIZATIONS 102418
    (Continued)

    (2) The parents or guardians sign and date the back of the California School Immunization Record,
PM 286 (6/95), which is also used for family day care homes, under the "Personal Beliefs
    Affidavit."

    (f) As required by the California Code of Regulations, Title 17, Section 6035(b), a child who does not meet
any of the requirements in Sections 102418(c), (d), or (e), shall not be admitted to a family day care
    home.

    (g) The licensee shall document each child's immunizations as required by the California Code of
Regulations, Title 17, Section 6070, and shall maintain such documentation for as long as the child is
    enrolled.

    (1) This requirement includes updating each child's PM 286 (6/95) when the child is due to receive
required immunizations after enrollment in the family day care home.

I have a child who turned 2 in Jan and looks like has some missing Immunizations. I just caught it, should I allow this child to continue to come or should I not allow them back until they have them done or proof that they have an appt to get them done OR that there is a medical reason why they are not done.

I am due for an inspection and don't want any of my paperwork missing at all.

Thanks for your help.... BTW I am in CA

I had a parent who didn't get their child's shots on time, for various reasons. The child was sick, the child was running a fever, the child was going to have surgery, etc. I gave the parent a notice IN WRITING every two weeks, they had to take the note to their dr to sign as to why the child wasn't getting her shots. She ended up being 6 mos behind.

I have one that is a month behind. I gave her until next Friday, then I have to have a drs' note.

soapbox time - Why is it MY responsibility to see to it that YOU immunize YOUR child?????? Why should I get fined if YOU don't do it on time?

Thanks Sharlan for posting. I do have it in my policies that it is the parents responsibility to update me and that I will pass any fines onto the parents. BUT why should we even have to go there.

I am going to let the parent know that she has until this Friday to get me something in writing as they were due in JAN and it is now May.....

Until the day I have to have it or else they cannot attend. Give me a waiver or give me the records to come!

so i tell dcm that I need them by Friday or the child can't attend. So DCM says I can do it wednesday, then I say thats fine but dck can't come back until Friday then. So dcm starts to argue that I want the Immunizations by friday, but then won't let child come back on thursday and she needs DC UGH. I want to pull my hair out right now.

AND I think I need to change my PHB. It just says

I am required by the state of California to keep each and every one of the children enrolled in my care updated on all immunization cards unless documentation is provided by the child’s doctor has been submitted.

It does not say anything about if you fail to provide your child CAN not attend care. Or do you think that it should matter as this is a state law???

            UGH again

This is what I have in my handbook:

              IMMUNIZATIONS
Unless for medical or religious reasons all children must be up-to-date on their immunizations. If an exemption is required, Section II of the History of Immunizations form must be completed and on file. For medical exemptions, a physician’s signature is required. If there is an unimmunized child enrolled in the daycare all parents with enrolled children who are 12 months of age or younger will be notified. For privacy reasons no personal information will be shared.
Children must be excluded for a FULL 48 hours after receiving immunizations. It is recommended that parents schedule for immunizations on a Friday afternoon so that the child can remain home on Saturday and Sunday and then return to care on Monday. Immunizations must be up-to-date for all children based on the Kansas Department of Children and Environment regulations. If the provider discovers a child who is not up to date, the child must be excluded from care until their immunizations are current – a child excluded from care must still remain home for the FULL 48 hours after receiving their immunizations. Remember to keep up with your child’s immunization schedule in order to avoid exclusion.

I exclude starting the day they're out of date. And then I exclude two days after they've received their immunizations. Since I started doing this, I've only had one parent who "forgot" to schedule an appointment and their child was excluded for 4 days. In this day of digital/electronic everything there is absolutely no excuse for not setting up a reminder in your phone/device's calendar to make sure it gets done.

I send home a notice before they are due, giving them the date of exclusion if they aren't vaccinated on time. I had ONE parent test me on this, and I let her slide for ONE DAY (schedule apt on a Thurs, child was overdue on Wed) and didn't I get inspected? It's still a citation on my file.

                NEVER, EVER again.

so how do you guys track each child and know when they are due? I have 18 kids enrolled and there is no way that I could stay up to date on everyone's schedules.

I do send out a quarterly reminder asking for immunization updates/reminders or change of information, phone numbers change of address and etc. Most of the time parents never respond to it.

For whatever current immunization form I have, I look at it as soon as I get it and set reminders for myself for one month, two weeks, one week, and one day in advance. I just use my ipad and iphone to set up those reminders. Then again, I only have three dck's at the moment
