    Cash, Check or Charge?

    Hi everyone,

I prefer to take checks because they are easier for me to track, but sometimes the parents come in with cash. Sigh. So, I have to make sure it is all tallied nice and neat so it is ready to go come tax time. Recently, I had a parent ask me if I took credit cards. I do not, but now there are apps to do it on my smart phone. I'm not sure if this is a good idea. Should I raise the rate by what the company charges? And then the check/cash clients stay the same? Does this create any kind of liability issue if their info gets compromised from the app? Should I stay away altogether, or would this make me more marketable to parents?

    Thanks!

I use ProPay for my clients who wish to use a credit card. However, it charges me a percentage of the amount transferred, so I add it to the parent's bill. It is very secure.

I've heard of people using PayPal as well, by sending an invoice to the parent's email a few days before it's due. PayPal is very secure and stands behind their technology.

I use square for electronic payments & charge the parents a $5 fee to cover the service charge. Paypal works too,and I will charge the fee if they send it the 'wrong' way. You can send it in a way that pp doesn't take $ out from the transfer. Both are free to use- I think Square takes 2% of the transfer. Just go to their website & they'll end you their smartphone reader free. I generally just take cash or check though. Most of my parents have just used those.
