    Ugh Hair Tie Issues

Per day care polices I do not allow any type of hair accessories expect small elastic bands. I figured that nothing could go wrong with those. WRONG.

today one of my DCGs who is 20 months came with horsey tail hair. she pulled it out. about 1030 we are toileting all of the children and washing hands. I find the elastic hair tie around the wrist of one of my older kids and the circulation is getting cut off, hand is purple. OMG it must have been on there for about two hours, the kids both got here around 830am.

So now I am wanting to NOT allow those hair ties either, but feel like now I am just banning everything.

Is there anything else out there that the girls can use to tie back hair? what do you allow??

I would only allow scrunchie types that are cotton around a band? That's what I use and there's no way a baby could choke on it (well I suppose the could but not with proper supervision) and wouldn't cut off circ. I would be afraid of the small ones for choking and what happened today! How scary! I only have boys and a girl with very little hair so we don't have this issue yet.

Yeah, that would be a good compromise. I allow everything but if it comes off once it goes in cubby...if their hair stuff is coming off daily it goes immediately in cubby before breakfast.

this was the first time that the 20month old came with the hair tie. I did not even notice that they pulled it out so I didn't even realize that it was missing. I feel just horrible, the wrist is still really red and so are the fingers.....

2nd on the scrunchies! The small elastic ones are a pain! Child pulls it off and they are so small and very difficult to see on the floor! Then a little baby finds it and pops it in their mouth.

Ugh, that bothers me too. I don't have anything in my rules about it but I should. That and clips they won't keep in.
One day one of my SA dcbs brought in that silly band stuff and I let the older ones do it during naptime, telling them they MUST pick up every single one of them when they were done. Well, of course I went and scoured the area afterwards and found a bunch. That was the end of that.
My youngest dck is 22 months and most are good about not putting things in their mouths(most of the time they bring me things they find such as lint or birdseed we tracked in), but once in awhile.....

I require hair accessories to be securely attached and will remove them upon arrival if they appear to be loose or have the possibility of falling out easily.

I have several girls with long hair and I really haven't had an issue. The parents fix their hair nicely and the rubber bands stay put. Most use either the small plastic ties or the little rubber coated ones.

I don't know why but I really haven't had issues with any of the circular ties. The only ones I've had issues with are the barrettes and/or clips parents use...those fall out all the time. I stopped allowing the girls to wear them.

I never had any issues with DC kids, as the children rarely had their hair brushed, let alone put up...

but my dd, she took one of those teensy tiny rubberbands off her teensy pigtail and got it stuck on her finger. That was something I literally had to cut off, and she could have lost her finger had I not caught it just right. So never again did I buy those!

I generally pull hair accessories out the minute kids arrive. When I have the issues with bangs in their face I use the tiny rubber bands for the pebbles hairdo - just to keep the hair off their face and its easy for me to see if it comes out. I find when I do it they don't come out. The regular hair tie elastics are the ones that always slip out for me.
