    Wwyd?

So my assistant tells me today that she can't be here tmrw. I depend on her to either pick up the school age kids from school or stay here with the little ones while I go get the sa's from school. Tomorrow is supposed to be rainy/snowy and I'm a no vehicle transport daycare.

I'm calling in some favors from another provider to p/u my school age dck tomorrow but I am beyond frustrated since this isn't the first time the assistant has pulled this at the last minute. Sick? Fine, I understand that. Appointment that you've known about for weeks? Not so much.

I basically have 2 choices going forward (next year)

    1. Get rid of assistant & don't take school agers. This eliminates the issue of picking up from school.

    2. Get a new assistant. Though I'm not keen on this one it is an option

If SA business is not important to me I’d no longer provide pick-up services. I’d fire assistant.

If SA business is important to me, I’d start interviewing for a new assistant.

If they are worth it, hire a new assistant.

But, have you talked to your assistant? Did you tell her this lack of notice was completely unacceptable? Because if you decide to fire her and hire someone else you don't want to run into the same problems.

What about trying to find a college student that can be on an "as needed" basis. I have 3 or 4 different women who I have approved as assistants for exactly this reason. That way when my regular assistant calls out, I know I have someone to call.

Yeah I agree. I'm not taking SA kids after this school year because I don't want to deal with the transportation. My kids I can figure out, others I'm not keen on. We live in a fairly good area, safety & climate wise, but we still get rain and the kids can't walk home in the pouring rain at nap time to boot. Plus next year I have one going to school too far to walk so that's another problem I have to figure out.

okay so it sounds like school agers are not working for you anymore. I would remain available for school agers only if the parents provide transportation to your house. they can figure out a friend or relative to handle that if they really need after school care with you. Odds are, they will figure it out because otherwise they will need to find transport AND new daycare.

Well I only have 1 SA boy, had 1 last year as well. I'm just more of an infant and toddler care provider. I love my own SA children but other people's SA children... not so much! There's a nearby provider who will be doing after school care at her DC next year so I would refer them to her if I was asked. The problem this yr is that it's my DS's best friend and it's just not working out plus it takes up a whole spot for only $7/hr. Financially it's just not worth it for me to take SA kids for 3hrs a day and no one wants to pay infant-toddler prices for a 6-10yr old. I have no problems finishing out this year because he doesn't come for summer anyway so it's just til early June.

Can you accept school age but not do pick up?

                  That's what I do.
