    Wwyd?

Our crawl space flooded this weekend. I discovered it yesterday and got the sump pump working (dh was, of course, out of town!). However, the water heater and furnace were both in the water and their breaker tripped. Both need to dry out before we can turn them back on, so I will be without heat and hot water at least through tomorrow.

My question is - Would you open? Temperatures here during the day are going to be in the 70's, but in the 30's overnight, which means the house is extremely chilly overnight. Plus, we have no hot water. I think my dh feels that the parents will be put out, and I agree, but it is really cold in here to me (low 50's until after lunch). I know for some of you 50's is like a spring day, but not here!

In my state we are required to have hot water for hand washing etc.

Personally, I would probably close if I didn't have hot water (even if it wasn't a state rule) just because I couldn't imagine doing my daily activities (hand washing, diapering, clean up etc ) with out hot water.

Does your state have any regulations about that?

I would call all your parents and let them know whats going on and let them decide. Most likely they will show up, but at least you let them decide

Oh, and if you are used to 70ies and it is 50 or so in the house until noon...I would definitely close. That is probably really cold for you all.

~ fwiw.....we were thrilled to have temps in the upper 20ies yesterday. My DH and I ran our errands all day in t-shirts and short sleeves.

On Fri it hit 53/54 & was sunny here & my own kids played outside with me after school in short sleeves & shorts (w/light jackets which they threw off within 5 min proclaiming "it's too hot, mom!!!") To the original poster - I would close. Sorry for the inconvenience!

I would call them and close. That would be too cold for the kids since they are not used to it. Unless your licensing allows space heaters to be run during daycare. Then I would run the space heater a few hours before opening & then again during nap Time.
You wouldn't want a dck to end up catching a cold and a parent to say it was because of the lack of heat.

The hot water is more my concern than the heat, really. Honestly, I'll have to look up our regs. for hot water - I've never thought of that before, nor faced this!

Blackcat, if it were in the 20's here, we would all be hibernating!! ::

I think I am just feeling guilty because since September we have had a week with no AC (I stayed open, but it was so humid and hot!), the Great Bedbug catastrophe (had to close for the week while we treated), several snow days, and now this!

I would close... Just not worth the headache and risk.

I would close due to both. You need hot water for everybody washing hands, and the 50's inside all day long is too cold for the kiddos to be in, IMO. I wouldn't even be able to work if it was only in the 50's in my house, and I live in WI!
