    Wow! Crazy CL Ad.

I am speechless. Let strangers into your home to run a business and in exchange you pay your childcare provide $0.57/ hour. (on the off chance they only work you 40 hours a week).

It is tough to get work around here but I cannot imagine how this situation could work well for anyone. Certainly not the children!

In my home no way.. BUT.. I might consider the idea if she wanted to take over a rental property. She could pay me rent plus a percentage of everything she brings in to cover extra wear and tear..

Yeah, she won't be paying much of anything..... you can only have three here without a license and if you are licensed you must live in the residence where the daycare operates. I am licensed and charge 125/week. So let's say she gets that, which isn't likely, she will be making 1183/month to care for three children. Not including food, supplies, breakage, or any of the other things. But hey, I guess she isn't paying rent or utilities to run her business....

When is she going to be watching the kids with all the laundry, cleaning, and cooking she plans on doing?

I just found her other ad. It says that it is $10/hour for one child or $15/hour for two if she watches them in their own home AND can bring other kids. that is a far cry for $100/month. And she suggests finding this ad in the other ad. Sad to see someone so....clueless?

Someone needs to tell her what she is really looking for is a nanny share, from the sounds of it.

            Nothing on CL surprises me.

No-one in their right mind would ever take on the liability of a childcare in their home unless they owned and ran it.
And I don't know where you live $125 q week, but you are underpaid.
Still nothing I see on CL shocks me.... Sad

A lot of people make much less then I do, it really is dependent on where you live and whether you need a license to operate. Some people make 75/week, some 300/week.

125 is average for my area, and its what all unlicensed, licensed, and certified daycares charge.

However, rates that low definitely raise flags for me. Imho its not even enough to feed that child for a month.

There are small towns around here that charge $65 to $95 a week per child, yikes!

back to the topic, she just sounds really desperate for work and you never know, someone may take her up on it but they won't want to pay nanny wages for you to bring extra kids in their home. They can find a nanny for that wage without the extra hassle. I bet what will turn off even more parents is that she doesnt have reliable transportation. Most people dont consider bus reliable unless she is in an urban area where public transport is the norm.

I completely missed the no car part. We are in the Portland metro area of Oregon. Tons of buses here!

The part the irks me most is that it give parents an unrealistic expectation of daycare cost, then they come to reputable fcc facilities and think they can pay less because Craigslist tells them I should not charge so much.

I'm not tactful when I get price comments.

If a parent tries the old
"So-and-so down the road will watch my kids for $40 less per week....."

........I just smile and say "You usually get what you pay for..but if price means more to you than anything else, you should go with so-and-so"

I like the look on their faces. They obviously expected to hear "Oh I can beat that!"

I agree... I posted a couple wks ago about a daycare that's posting all the time in every town in our county about "will beat any daycare's price!" Her ad is just icky, same old pics of her kids.. I just can't believe she thinks that will work! Maybe it's working but ick... You get what you pay for!!

I wouldn't worry about it too long. She most likely will burn out for the little pay or the parents would find out how difficult having several children that aren't yours in your home is.

Are there any laws against this in Oregon? In California, a provider can only provide family child care in a home that they live in. My former boss did something similar to what she wants to do (do daycare in a parent's home for a discount) when she first started her business but that was over 30 years ago and is now considered an illegal practice. IJW because we want to move to Oregon (Salem) hopefully after I graduate- though I'm not planning on doing what she's doing just curious.

I'm in Iowa and sadly that is the average rate in my area for unregistered and registered homes. Centers charge about double.

If you are legally unlicensed I believe you can provide care where ever you want but if you want to be registered it must be in your home.

Also, if you are renting(at least in my city) you need the owners permission to get the home occupation license that you would need for the state to license you.

We have one of those too. Its name your price
She never posts pictures but is licensed. She has had two "rare" openings for six months and one is an infant space. Something has to be wrong if she cant fill an infant space. A family that I interviewed emailed her to see how low they could get the rate and said they only wanted to pay $1.50/hour for their two kids, ages 8wks and 1.5yrs, and she said okay!
