    Preschool

The part I hate the most about doing daycare is the goofy preschool for 3 year olds. Four year olds I almost kinda get, but 3 year old ugh! The one mom told me today that her 3 yr old will be going to preschool in the fall 1 out of the 3 days that he normally comes here. I also have their baby. So, I will still have the baby 3 days a week and the 3 yr old 2 days a week. So I'll be out 1 day a week with him. I hate that I only have the kids until their 3 and then it all gets goofed up.

I don't accept (or rather charge) for anything except 3 days.

If they want less than 3 days of care, they are drop in and drop in pays a HIGER rate and is NOT guaranteed space....even if scheduled in advance.

Eliminates the conversation of preschool for me.

I do have kids that go but I don't discount for it.

Our preschools here are either mornings 3 days a week (8:30-11:00) or they are afternoons (12:30-3:00) 3 days a week.

I charge for the whole day.

That's a good idea. The dcb needs to be potty trained to go and let me tell you, I honestly dont' see it happening. LOL! I didn't think to ask her what he would be doing the other portion of the day. Unless they have daycare there that is before/after. I'll have to ask her tomorrow. I have had kids that go partial day and then come back to me and I dont' discount for partial day either.

          Aw, thanks!

For the 2 kids I have that go, it is more about it being the "thing" to do verses the kids really needing it...kwim?

It's where both DCM's friends' kids go so of course the DCM's can't NOT do the same.

That's my opinion also. Preschool, especially for 3 yr olds, is highly overrated IMO.

I operate as a preschool and agree.

Do you see any advantage of 3 yr olds that are normally in daycare to go to preschool then? Why are people so drawn to it?

I think it's overrated, but I am a former pre-K teacher and feel that as a parent/teacher/childcare professional I can prepare my children as well as my dcks for our kindergarten programs which actually are waaaay above the entry point for surrounding schools.

ECE is important, regardless of age. But a light in home daycare preschool curriculum over 1-2 years can get an average kiddo ready for Kindergarten easily with a competent adult in charge IMHO.

I concur with Ecs. It's NOT necessary.

THOSE are the necessary skills my dcks learn with me.

I can see if the child is an over achiever I would recommend it. right now ALL of my 3-5 year old kids can read bob Books collection 2. I get some parents that as soon as they catch wind they pull them and throw them in the fancy smancy ACADEMIC private academy around the corner from me. Like BC said, it's the status and the fact that they need the IMAGE....

I understand it in some cases. Like here, I dont do any official curriculum but all of my preschool aged kids have transitioned well to preschool or kinder. I am fine if parents want to have the super structured school readiness experience because that is not what I provide. Not all of the providers here offer preschool and like with my group, it is mostly under two years old so an older child may need something a little more to get ready for kinder. I think 6 months of preK is beneficial for a lot of kids but again, just depends on what they are currently getting at home and at daycare. Not all daycares are preschools is my point.

I have a family that signed up DCG for next fall, she will only go PT and will still come here. They are doing it so DCG will know some of the kids when she starts Kindergarten. I have no problem with it as my pay won't change and I'm working less

However, if the schools all start free Pre-K for 3+ I imagine it will be harder to get kids-I don't take infants...They haven't started it yet but I'm waiting for it!
