How Would You Handle This "Private" Matter?

I have a DCB who is 3 yo. Very good kid - always has been. Great family. But the boy has recently been playing with himself quite often. Would you notify the family of the issue, and if so, how would you go about it? (Letter, verbal, phone call, etc?)

I have pulled him aside and have told him we don't touch our privates at my house, and how it spreads germs, etc. - and he is aware that what he's doing isn't allowed as now all I have to say is "Lucas?" and he stops right away.

Just curious how others have handled this issue in the past.

I don't address it with parents, honestly. My rules on the subject are "Not at daycare, go wash your hands," because I know a few clients in the past have had rules about them not being allowed to do it at home either (which I think is sad but I'm sooooo not going there). So, my old standard of "That's something you can do in private at home in your bathroom or bedroom," treads too hard on potential family stances on the subject and I don't want to get into it.

So, "not at daycare, please wash your hands."

I don't say anything to the parents. If the child is playing with themself at daycare, they're do it at home, too.

I just quietly say, "go wash your hands" and let it go at that. I don't make a big issue over it.

It's really quite normal. I agree with the others. A simple "go wash your hands" should be sufficient.

Thanks for all the responses. What would you do if a parent addresses that their child witnessed another child touching themselves and that parent had an issue with it? i.e. Little Tommy says, "Billy was touching himself at daycare today, it was gross."

I do address it. I say, "Elvis has been playing with his private part at the table, circle time, on his cot, etc. We talked about how we cannot do that at school. If you could reinforce this at home I would really appreciate it. Thanks!"

I have also been known to use the word wang before when they don't quite catch on to what private part I am talking about. ::

That's why I address it .... I don't need a wang touching epidemic. I have yet to have a girl do it here.

Speaking of wang touching... And off topic... But my son was written up at school last week for whipping it out and peeing on the playground...

Imagine how horrified I was ... Thing is... My son is the most well mannered child I've ever seen... Yes and no ma'am... Respectful... Does anything asked of him... I guess technically nobody ever told him not to whip it out and pee at school....

Ok in his defense we live in he woods and camp often... So he's had to do that out of necessity..

Not in his defense I have to think about what would happen if another child and went home and told their parents "so and so peed on the playground and I saw his wonky".

I do have to admit when I read the ODR form... Inside I was and outside I was a little horrified as a parent of said child... His response "the substitute wouldn't let me go inside to pee"
