I have a dcg 9m she came in wheezy today. A few minutes ago she started coughing and it sound just like the commercial for whooping cough. she has been here for over 2 hours and has coughed a little here and there but that was the first and only time she did the whooping thing. No fever or other symptoms. Would you send home or wait and see if she does it again?
WWYD (Quick responses appreciated)

I had the same situation yesterday. I informed the parents about it and told them I would monitor it. I told them I was concerned enough that they needed to know about it immediately, but didn't feel that it warranted being sent home -YET. I kept in communication with the parents throughout the day.
If the child was unable to participate or just plain seemed miserable, I'd send home.- Flag

I have a cough that sounds like a fog horn, ALWAYS, since I was a baby.
If you really feel the baby is not well, you can always tell mom, I would rather be safe than sorry, her cough sounds really bad, please take her to the doctors....- Flag

the whooping like sound could be caused by her having some respiratory problems. If she's also wheezing, I'd say it's cause to get checked out. The chances of it being whooping cough seem very slim, but the stridor could be caused by restricted airways from RSV or something else. Either way, it warrants a check.Hee hee! Look, I have a signature!- Flag
