Taping Things Up

I always decorate for holidays by taping things to the woodwork, ceiling fans, ceiling, etc. But now in some places I have a terrible unsightly sticky residue that is like a magnet for the dirt.
Any ideas on how to remove this and not have to sand/repaint my entire house?

I have used Goo Gone with good results getting rid of sticky residue. I have had tape discolor the stain on woodwork. It's like it takes the stain off.

Have you tried a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser?

I use Goo Gone. Works great, just let it sit for a few minutes.

Try a little vegetable oil on a rough dishrag.
