Called Off Sick

I called off sick so naturally my friend that works at a center called to let me know my family called them asking if they had any openings. I don't even care at this point. Catering for multiple families is exhausting when they all think you should be at the beck and call. And never get sick and even if you are sick you should work through it. Me and my son both throwing up.

The center doesn't take school agers but whatever. If I lose this family I think I will drop my other family and be done with it.

And I've only closed one other time in over a year. This is my mom who doesn't want her kids to nap either and her daughter throws fits at pick up time which she does nothing about... I can't be a personal nanny to five kids plus my own four. I'm doing two different lunch times, two different afternoon bus times, one kid makes up lies that me and husband fight all the time...so not true but her mom of course told all the neighbors.

I really dislike people today.

Wow you close twice in a year and she calls a center? Did she know your friend works there? If so maybe she did it to purposely get to you. That's pretty steep, one of my old clients previous provider closed like monthly for one reason or another! She said she put up with it because it was her best friend but then something else happened and she moved him to my care after 4mos. I also had an interview who's current provider closes for illness a lot. I've closed once, my whole family was vomiting and it was winter break. I had patents pick up early once as well back in August from a sudden onset migraine and vomiting. No one was upset but one mom wanted my teenagers to watch her son and I just couldn't do it. So 1 full day and one half day in 18mos. If that's too much for someone... find a center!

Maybe you will lose them, and then you could get in some families who appreciate you!

It is possible they were looking for a back-up plan. Maybe their old plan B did not work out for them today.

Exactly my feelings! I am not super woman and I don't even try to be! I get sick occasionally, my kids get sick, my family needs to have regular doctor and dentist appointments. I am one person I can not do it all. If that's what they're looking for then a center is what they need, not a home daycare

Well I think both understand some closure is inevitable, the first one wasn't for illness but because she trained for marathons and needed recovery days or traveled. She had no children of her own and had an assistant as well. She chose to close for various reasons, it wasn't due to illness.
The second was a nurse practitioner and she understood that people get sick, obviously that's her profession. But that provider was her only experience with daycare so she didn't know if that was normal or not and started to seem excessive. I explained that it try to exclude sick children to prevent me or my children from getting sick enough to close and explained I closed once for a stomach virus and a half day for the migraine and my dh filled in for me when I was in the hospital unexpectedly so she knows I've had to close but monthly or more seems excessive to me.

I've been a daycare parent as well as a provider so I feel for both sides. Back before everyone had a cell phone I showed up at my providers house to drop off and she didn't answer for awhile and turned me away because she was sick. I will admit I was pissed, I had a backup when this stuff was planned but she wasn't one to take them at the drop of a hat, plus I had 2 kids and I would be late for work and possibly lose MY job if I just didn't show up because I was trying to find childcare, I would have had to go home to call backups and such. She ended up taking them and I think her dh stayed home from work to help since she had 5 of her own kids as well. Now we can text parents at 9pm or 2am or 6am for that matter if we feel horrible and need to close. If I even think it's possible I text parents and let them know I will touch base with them in the AM if I wake up feeling worse.

It is funny how we never really know some of our clients. I was mentoring a girl once after I had been closed two days the previous week for child care conference. She said she knew I had been closed because one of my clients had called to see if they could bring their kids to her dc but she said no. I have had these kids since birth, oldest is now 4....and they are on their third child with me. They are still at my dc and appear happy.
