I never bothered to look at the requirements for it when starting because at that time I had no intentions on getting one. However, I am now considering it. I definitely feel as providers we have a right to protect our own families, but definitely understand and respect that not all parents will agree.
Thanks to those who gave input on how it has affected your business or how it hasn't!!
I also live in Texas. I own a gun. DFPS know about it. I had to fill out a form letting them know what kind, where the gun is located and where the ammo is. She personally saw the gun and the locked up ammo. I passed. Yes I do inform my parents that I do have one. So far all of the are happy that I will take that extra step to protect what is in my house. BTW it's a shotgun

I didn't read all the other answers, but in Illinois licensed providers cannot have handguns on the premises unless a police officer lives there. Any other guns must be disclosed to daycare families.

I am legally unlicensed, but I do try to follow most of the licensing rules. We are allowed guns as long as they are in a locked safe (out of reach) with the ammo in a separate room in a separate safe.

My dh works in law enforcement, so yes, we do have guns (one of which is ours and one with his work). He is extremely careful and follows all of the rules. We also lock the rooms the guns are located in.

To be honest, I think there are much more dangerous things in this world and in our house than guns that are in a locked safe in a locked cabinet with the ammo in a separate locked room in a locked safe. I think the knives I have in the kitchen are much more dangerous and easier to access. In fact, many of the things in the kitchen are extremely dangerous...things we take for granted or things that can be overlooked easily. I think the playground equipment at the park we go to is more dangerous because of the amount of time we spend there and the risks the kids try to take. I think WALKING to the park is significantly more dangerous (strangers, animals, cars). I think guns get a bad image, but in reality, the statistics on gun-related accidents with children (especially in homes where there are a lot of safeguards and the children are educated on gun safety early) are much lower than the number of accidents that occur otherwise. Every time I am driving my children in the car, I think "it's not a matter of 'if;' it's a matter of 'when' we are going to get into a vehicular accident. I just hope that when it does happen, the children are not with me, it's minor without injuries, and it's not my fault ."

Just out of curiosity ... do you mean that FCC providers can't have guns at all or can they have them as long as they disclose that info to the parents?

They can't have handguns on the premises at all, unless there is a person living there who has to carry a gun as a condition of employment (such as a peace officer).

They can have long guns so long as they are stored according to the regulations and disclosed to all daycare families.

I believe the storage regulations state that guns must be stored disassembled, in a locked cabinet inaccessible to the children. The ammunition must also be stored in a locked cabinet inaccessible to children, but separate from the guns.
